Mugglings

Jul 23, 2008 15:27

I've lived in NYC for almost five years now and in that time I've been mugged at least four times.  I never really thought it was a big deal because they never got away with anything of real value and thankfully I've never gotten really hurt.  Two of these times have happened where I live in Bushwick, and my boyfriend twice as well since moving to ( Read more... )

I was mugged on the M train on my way home from work. Guy snatched my nintendo DS out of my hands and bolted out the door. I did report it to the police, but there was no resolution. =\

My only tip is keep gadgets inside your purse/pockets, and be aware of your surroundings.

Yea, I live off of the J/M train and it can be vicious! I usually have my ipod in my lap under my bag and I don't usually listen to it on the street on the walk home. I carry my macbook with me though for work and I'm always worried someone will try to grab my bag off me which actually has happened.

Yanno, I've seen people using their macbooks and other laptops on the J/M... I'm always freaked out for them to have them out like that...

i don't live in a particularly unsafe neighborhood but I avoid being in them at night. I don't know what your work schedule is but if there is any way to avoid walking from the train at night I would start there.

and as previous poster said, keep all gadgets hidden and have an alert confident air about you.

It's better to walk a little further/out of your way if you can manage to stay in an area of high traffic and brighter lights. When I lived in Bushwick, I didn't deviate very far from my walk along Wyckoff, where there was always someone hanging out ( ... )

a friend of mine was walking home in Bushwick from the train and a couple of dudes said within ear shot: "Come on, we're doing a follow."

Creepy. So, instantly she pulls out her cell phone, holds it up in the air and runs. They left her alone that time. I know I would never walk down there by myself passed 9 p.m.

a follow?
that sounds so f-ing creepy.

This guy followed my boyfriend on a bike and kept ramming into him.

hells yes it's scary. to think they're criminal AND organized?!? I'd much rather face a staggering, homeless drunk with a blade than a group organized by language and strategy.
