Your fave overnight trip from NYC

I've checked some tags and stuff and found mention of stuff to do for maybe a daytrip or people looking for ideas just to escape the city via plane.. But I was looking for some more suggestions... like for instance, I have a whole weekend off to myself. Friends were possibly visiting but rescheduled, and now I have all this free time! I'd like to ( Read more... )

new haven is nice. that's $14 each way on metro north. there's also boston which you can get to via the new bolt bus which i hear is a comfortable ride.

I go to Boston frequently. Take the Lucky Star Bus for $15 each way and it's pretty fun. The nightlife can be interesting depending on what you're into and if you do research and the day stuff in the summertime is really really fun.

This Hotel is cheap and Central.

actually, i'm an idiot and didn't really read your post as well as i should have. i thought you were looking for somewhere to stay around the city because you were coming to visit (adur). so, while i like JC and weehawken, that's probably not too far of an NYC stretch. anyway, i second the new haven suggestion (i'll add stamford to the CT recc list). as far as long island goes, there aren't many superkool places on the island unless you want to maybe do some beaching or something? if that's the case, long beach is alright but it's not particularly fun for a daytrip. port jefferson is also nice for a quaint but enjoyable community, but it's a bit of a ride.

i'll third the new haven idea.
check out pepe's (world famous + epic pizza place..but beware of the long lines at night) and walk around the area. on sundays in the summer, they have live concerts on the green. the nightlife is slightly sleazy, so opt for an art gallery or something quiet. the atticus bookstore is also really nice for chilling and eating.
i used to live in a suburb outside of new haven, and now i live in stamford. there is little to nothing in stamford...we just have the mall. my vote goes to the cute and quaint new haven.

i've actually never been, but someone mentioned it to me once and it seemed interesting. i guess my disclaimer is that i have no idea if it's good or if it's very accessible from nj transit.

You could go to Storm King or Dia:Beacon, but those are more of day trips.
