doctor visit?

Nov 20, 2007 11:13

Last Friday, I spilled hot soup on my stomach and I burned the area pretty badly. I put gauze over it so it could absorb the pus from the blisters. Basically the patch of skin that I managed to burn is beat red and on top of it, there are huge blisters. I'm not sure if it's permanently going to stay that way or if it's eventually going to go away ( Read more... )

What school do you go to?

Isn't there someone who can help you (parents?) with something this serious?

I had a very small (half an inch across, just over an inch wide) burn on my arm about a year ago that sounds very similar to yours. It took forever to heal, and I still have a major scar from it. YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS TAKEN CARE OF. YOU CAN'T DO IT YOURSELF AT DUANE READE.

OMG NOOO...MAJOR SCAR? Did you pop the blisters?

My mom just told me to wait and see what happens. I go to ghetto BMCC.

Can you recommend which hospital I should go to?

I can still go even when this happened days ago?

depending on how bad the blisters are you may want to consider going to the dr for some silvidine dressing and antibiotics to prevent infection. Unfortunately if you dont' have insurance your look at about $300-$400 for the er charge and I'm not sure what the physician charge will be. There are payment plans you can get on though and hospitals are generally pretty flexible with payments.

Oh lordy! I don't have that much money right now :\

that's just an estimate. you really shouldn't let your money determine whether or not you seek care. I say "flexible payment plans" loosely. as in you pay what you can. i'd rather be in debt a few hundred dollars than have an infected leg.

That is a very good point.

I guess I'll just have to deal.

Thanks for your help :]

i didnt burn myself with hot soup but i was workin at a resturant awhile ago and burned a small part of my arm on the pizza oven. it wasnt as big of an area as you but it still sucked. i didnt go to the doctor or anything. i just kept it clean and put neosporin on it for a lil bit. i think it was about 2 weeks till thing started lookin ok. eventually, it started scabbing but this is your stomach so it's a even more tough situation. since you dont have much money, i dont know what else to really suggest. good luck

I read on-line that it will take 2-3 weeks for it to go away/heal. And someone told me not to put anything on the area...so while I thought that was bogus, I put something on it...which caused me to get blisters and pus.

So, I'm just not touching it and have gauze over it. I'll leave it on there for one more week and see the nurse at my school.

First, good for you for NOT waiting until the long T-day weekend starts to take care of this. PLEASE have it looked at by a medical professional. Your burns sounds like at least second-degree burns and it can get seriously infected, complications, etc.

Briefly, best to call 311 and ask them for some sort of recommendations for medical care facilities for the uninsured.

Otherwise I can't find the information that someone gave me ages ago, but for various general uninsured health care issues, one dude had gone to Bellevue Hospital Center's urgent care center (maybe ambulatory care center), but not sure what it's called. This is the one that has regular day hours, etc. He went there because of various severe, chronic health problems while he was uninsured and needed periodic medical care, but also medications; I don't know how things were set up for him, though. For background, though Bellevue is well known internationally for all types of specialties, it is still a full service community public hospital with an excellent ER etc ( ... )

Oh, duh, btw: though your school health center is closed, you can still try and contact campus services for what arrangements they have with community (meaning NYC) services for uninsured students with health problems. It's worth a shot.

Otherwise I still recommend going to Bellevue Hospital Center (or any of the other NYC public hospitals; I believe *public* hospitals must provide at least some basic care regardless of ability to pay, but private hospitals can shift you off elsewhere and/or hit you later with a monster bill). For a complete list of NYC public hospitals, on the official gov site:

Aww man, thanks sooo much. I just called 311 and they recommended me going to the Bellevue Hospital as an emergency. So I will do that right after class tomorrow.

Thanks again :)
