Why Steven Moffat should not let other people write his stuff

Dear Steven Moffat,

Please don't let other people write your stuff anymore. Or at least, become friends with people who can write as well as you can. All things being equal between episodes one and two of Sherlock (acting talent, production, directing), the average suckitude of episode two just depressed me.

I quite agree. The second episode was pedestrian to say the least with none of the mythic/archetypal fun that made the first episode so engaging. Holmes showed no brilliance, took a long time to come to simple conclusions, and there was nothing of originality about it ( ... )

I liked the first half, but the second half definitely went way downhill for me, even disregarding (and I don't) the racefail involved. I should not be able to pick up on anything before Sherlock Holmes. That is the point of Sherlock Holmes. He is smarter than me, let's keep him this way. Also, why could Sarah not knock the chair she was tied to over herself? They kept cutting to her like she was going to do something awesome to save herself, and then she didn't and I was frankly pretty pissed. I don't mind that this show doesn't pass the Bechdel test because it is a show about John and Sherlock and is only three episodes long so I'm not expecting exceptionally well-developed side characters who have numerous conversations with one another without our main protagonists on screen. But I do hope that when we DO have women on screen, they can be, you know, strong women? The 2009 movie had two fantastic and badass women who got quite a bit of screentime, given our protags, and it was delightful. Why couldn't Sarah have been more ( ... )

To be fair, I ALSO got something before Sherlock in the first episode. (When he was walking up the stairs, IT'S THE CABBIE IT'S THE CABBIE OMG.) But I didn't really mind in that case, because my reaction wasn't "Oh, come on," it was "AHHHH!"

Meanwhile, I still have the second episode on and here I am on LJ. Sucktastic. I agree, though, Benedict Cumberbatch (teehee) and Martin Freeman are worth watching even through bad writing.

(...even if there weren't NEARLY enough jokes about them as a couple in this episode.)

Yes, but you were supposed to get that from the moment the cab pulled up to the curb, that's why they showed it and kept cutting to the cabbie coming up the stairs. Sherlock doesn't see the same video cuts that we do, remember.

The second episode definitely needed more levity, but there were insights into their characters that I absolutely loved, and that made [the first half] worth it for me.

Um, hi! I'm one of jan_the_verse's high school flunkies, and she told me that we should be acquainted.

Yes. Um. I'm sorry for randomly commenting in your journal, and it's too bad that the writing for the episode was weak!

Now, I flee.

Nice to meet you as well!

...Actually, I know this is absurdly sudden, but I was hoping I might be able to meet up with you, arks, and eva_kasumi when I'm in New York this coming Friday?
