When LiveJournal, Inc., was launched in December the new team made it very clear that LiveJournal was going to change. We also said that we would respect the values and legacy of LiveJournal. But, we can’t ignore the fact that as LiveJournal nears its second decade it needs to make some business decisions ( Read more... )

That's me, actually -- I hardly ever speak up, but I'm just as pissed about this as the people who do.

And if I weren't freshly paid up for a year (great timing), I'd be rethinking my commitments here.

Silence doesn't equal agreement. There's no way right now to guess who agrees or disagree based on comments alone. Until enough time has passed that one can look at the site's usage and analyze it, no one knows who gives or doesn't give a shit.

You're right. I should go around looking for things to be pissed off about instead of just living my life!

Exactly why are you here disagreeing in the first place if you believe that so ardently?

Or you could live your life and not worry about people who disagree with you! Crazy idea! :D

I don't care of people agree or disagree with me. I'm just amazed at the level of bitterness over a few minor changes that really don't effect anyone who already has an LJ account.

So everyone should be apathetic? Just because something doesn't affect you, it doesn't mean you shouldn't care.

Personally, as a paying (and permanent) member of a site, it's not about the getting rid of basic - even if that does play a part. I'm investing in a company that I've been a part of for over seven years. I've put trust in said company. Now? Yeah, that trust is pretty much gone and SUP needs to realize that they're going to lose a ton of customers, paying customers, and the majority of users now will only be plus users since anyone in their right mind will head somewhere else.

I already have several accounts that I actively use and pay for here at LJ. Bottom line, I don't appreciate being disrespected and fucked without lube repeatedly by a company I pay to use. End of story.

And people wonder why the world is going to hell with apathetic idiots like this who don't give a damn unless it personally affects them.

Maybe you should take a look at how the communities operate instead of simply caring about your own selfish desires.

And we wonder how Bush got re-elected...

And since you couldn't bother to click on what the advisory board had to say, here is it again:

http://danahboyd.livejournal.com/1396.html
http://brad.livejournal.com/2368071.html

Please note what they say in regards to people who contribute, and about the people who use basic accounts. FFS, many basic accounts are just to read friends-only entries, and now people can't do that anymore!

But you don't care, because it doesn't affect you, and you can't be bothered to use your head to understand what it means to others, you selfish twit.

Well, sugar, I'm happy for you. I really am. But I've also been here almost seven years, and I am far from happy with LJ. And at this point it's gone beyond any one specific instance of them doing excessively moronic things -- it's gone beyond communities I watched getting banned, or moving to IJ under the threat of censorship, it's gone beyond the introduction of pointless new features that only take up space and serve to annoy me, it's gone beyond their continued habit of dutifully ignoring actual harassment complaints, it's gone beyond their support system being basically worthless, and it's gone beyond their shoving ads down our throats and sneaking them in even on Paid or Basic accounts via v-gifts and other nonsense -- all of those things pissed me off, but my real problem with LJ/6A/SUP has been their deplorable customer service. Several months ago I canceled a paid account I'd had for years, because I could not conscience continuing to fund a company which routinely displays such open contempt for its userbase. Over and over ( ... )

it's gone beyond their continued habit of dutifully ignoring actual harassment complaints,

There's some recent case law that's limiting the scope of "safe harbor" for SNS sites like LJ. The courts are finding for liability for social networking sites that allow harassment. In the wake of the Myspace suicide, there's expected to be a push for law regarding minors, and a genuine interest by some lawyers in generating "good" law for all users. I would expect the trend to continue to be to get harassing users off and reduce the risk of a lawsuit as the decisions strengthen the grounds for civil litigation.

Note that by harassment they are talking egregious harassment, but the expectation is that the scope of protected user behaviour will be narrowed.
