That Avatar one... I love, love, love that Ursa's mother-in-law gives her advice about subtly defending their children from each other, before Azula is even born. It reminds me very much of the role of women in Bujold's Barrayar: to stay home and protect the household, laboring as hard or harder than any of the men doing "men's work". The fact that Azula will not be such a woman complicates the gender dynamics very, very interestingly.

Obviously this is a huge, horrible burden, but I think I would have to watch the series a couple more times in order to explore issues like this and do them any kind of justice. It is so interesting, though -- thanks for such lovely feedback! And I haven't read any of the Vorkosigan books, but so many people I admire like them, they seem well worth investigating.
