As it happens, he's actually in the library. The last of the cycling procession of Arums of varying temperament left for the night a few hours ago, and Martel is actually half-dozing in his chair in front of the fire, a book open on his lap that's more casual reading than the assorted references for what he blandly refers to as 'my busywork' that are laid out in one state or another on a nearby table.
She probably won't actually be able to startle him, even so.

She doesn't expect to--when she comes in, she's heading toward one of the bookshelves, but when she realizes he's there (belatedly), she stops in her tracks.
"I didn't know you were in here," she says, smiling.

"I didn't know you were out of bed." He doesn't open his eyes, but he does mark his place and close his book.

Candice eyeshifts a little. "I'm well enough to wander a little," she protests, "I haven't gone outside."
