Alec is 5 years older than me. Occasionally it's entertaining. Like how I'm rewatching Dawson's Creek and it is so far off his radar. He was a freshman in college when I was in the eighth grade, but we didn't know each other then. And grunge is a mystery to me but very familiar to him. And he voted for Clinton, while I ... couldn't yet.

My one big cultural marker, though, is the group Ace of Base. People within a year or two of my age in either direction get this big "Aha!" moment around them because we remember them as this band that was big when we were just starting to get into pop music. Alec, who in 1993 was sixteen to my eleven, just shrugged when I asked him and said "They were this pop group that was popular for a little while."
