[Xander] Quietly Observing, Part IfikgirlOctober 26 2006, 19:42:42 UTC
Henry and Jason briefed Xander on the new arrivals on the way back to the house. Xander was happy to hear that one was a woman, happier to hear that she was a doctor - because he got the feeling that there would be a lot of need for doctors in the future and he was glad to know that at least one survived the fallout of The End of the World - and then his bubble was burst when he learned that she might be with the man she was traveling with. His happy thoughts and hormones further backed down when Henry pointed out that the pair had obviously been through some rough times and that the woman was a little bit skittish

Henry watched Jonas and Kayla exchange meaningful looks before they explained their relationship, letting Henry know he'd put his foot in it. He's taken the protectiveness they have for each other for something more than it was. Maybe he'd wanted to be able to see them together, be able to look at them and tell himself that yes- someone had made it through all that had happened with someone they loved, because damn it, someone should have!
"Ah," was all Henry said in acknowledgement of the correction. "A bed, right. Upstairs- he can take mine." Henry made another mental request to Noah to change the bedding before they got up there. The cleaner things were, the better it would be for Jonas.
Jason grinned at her comment about the booze. "Well, if you decide to sneak a swig for yourself, I promise not to tattle." he said with a wink. Then he turned his attention back to business. "There's a bathroom just to the left of the front door. It's small, but looked pretty clean and the lights work. And they've got hot water." He jogged ahead, turning smoothly to go backwards as he said, "I'll see if Noah has some extra towels in the house. If not, I'm sure Henry has some stashed in another house on the block." He turned front again and sped past the others to enter the house, bumping Brian who had just stepped off the porch

Brian nearly lost his balance when Jason bumped him, throwing the other man a dirty look over his shoulder before moving out to where the newest addition to the group, a young woman, was standing by the vehicles parked in the street. For a second he had flashes of Daphne, but shook it off. He even missed overhearing the rather girlie conversations between Daphne and Justin that usually annoyed the hell out of him.
"Need any help carrying anything inside?" He asked her softly, trying to seem as nice as possible, which was very difficult for Brian given his years spent trying to prove what an asshole he really was.
Kayla at least saw this one coming. That meant that she didn't flinch, take a step backward or jump out of her skin. Progress.
"No, I'm good, thanks," Kayla said, hoisting the emergency medical bag in her hand. Everything she needed was in that back; she made sure of it in case she ever needed to tend to Jonas on the road and didn't have time to sort through.
"Jason told me there's a bathroom downstairs, maybe you can show me the way, though?"

"Sure thing. Although I have to tell you I haven't been here much longer than you have." Brian smiled a little and started toward the house to lead Kayla to the bathroom. "I'm Brian, by the way."
Noah snapped to and started gathering the large metal mixing bowls, the tea kettle and the whiskey, when he saw as Henry did that Jonas was injured. Jason came in calling for him and grabbed a chair.
"I know, can you carry this, too?" Noah said, pointing to the first aid kit up in the cabinet.
"How do you... never mind," he said, deciding for the moment to leave the mystery of the how exactly Noah knew for another time. "I'll get the kit," he said as Noah went to join the group. As he reached for the kit, the dog continued to yap incessently. "That's it," Jason muttered and checked to see that no one was watching. Satisfied that no one was within earshot, he faced the dog. With the chair in one hand and the first aid in the other, he gathered a bit of his preternatural energy around himself. The dog stopped barking and instead started growling. Jason uttered a low growl of his own and pulsed a bit of power towards the dog. With one sharp yelp, the dog turned and ran frantically in the opposite direction. Finally, Jason sighed, enjoying the absense of barking. I may be willing to take orders from a lot of people, he thought, but there is no way some yappy little mutt is gonna be alpha over me. He took the chair and kit and headed to the bathroom.
Jason arrived by the bathroom a half a minute after Noah had. Noah took the first aid kit from Jason. "Not enough room in there for the chair," he told Jason and he set the first aid kit inside the bathroom with a nod to Henry.
Brian was there in the hall, too. He and Jason were exchanging dirty looks. "I think we might have too much help here," Noah murmured to himself. Then he turned to the two men and asked, "Brian, can you see about finding out where the dog has got to? And Jase, you want to help me in the kitchen?" Then, Noah went back into the kitchen to put on more water, as per Henry's mental request. He wasn't sure they'd need either more boiling water or to find the dog in the near future, but it split up Jason and Brian, so Noah gave the orders.

Brian looked between Jason and Noah, then made his way out to look for the dog. He knew a separation tactic when he he saw one, but he didn't argue. The less time he spent around Jason, the better. There was just something about that guy that rubbed Brian the wrong way. He started looking around the house, whistling.
"Here, puppy. Come here." He couldn't remember if anyone said the dog's name and if they did, he couldn't remember what it was.
"Sure, I can help." Jason turned his back on Brian and carried the chair back to the kitchen. He was still on a little bit of a power high, so it'd probably be best if he stayed away from Brian. Too tempting to reach out and show him what preternatural strength could do. He still didn't know quite why the guy got on his nerves so much. Maybe because of Brian's continuing suspiciousness.
Between the doctor and Henry, the new guy Jonas seemed to be in good hands. Better to keep busy elsewhere than hover and get in the way. He surveyed the kitchen and noticed the dinner fixings. "Hey," he said, "steak! Henry was just talking about that. Bet he'll be happy that's on the menu tonight."
Noah wondered if things might just be a little too hectic for a long explanation about he and Henry, but, well, aside from the two brand new arrivals, Jason was the only one in the dark about that. And, Noah was sort of interested in having Jason be at least a friend if not more (he could hear his friend Chance scolding him in his memory "straight but curious guys come with too much emotional baggage- their nothing but trouble"), so he went ahead and told him.
"I know- you wish you could have a great big burger and Henry thinks fast food is crap- he'd rather have steak and asparagus." As Jason looked at him with a puzzled expression, Noah went on, "I hear Henry's thoughts. He saved my life and now he has to keep me."

"But you don't... I mean," Jason was at a loss for words. He knew Henry and Noah appeared to have a relationship connection of some sort, like a father-son thing, but hearing thoughts? He couldn't feel any metaphysical vibes either of them. How could they.... unless - a horrible thought occured to him. "Are you a telepath? Can you tell what everyone's thinking?" he asked with trepidation. He was starting to trust Noah, but really didn't want him to know every little thought that was in his head. "Can Henry read thoughts too?" he said with alarm.
Noah watched Jason have a short freak out before he asked, "Are you a telepath? Can you tell what everyone's thinking? Can Henry read thoughts too?"
"No, I don't think I'm even a telepath- it's more that I just know whatever Henry knows as soon as he knows it. Like right now, he's just found out that Kayla and Jonas aren't married- oh! They're not even together- just friends. I don't get anything from anyone else and Henry doesn't get anything from anyone, me included," Noah answered as he pulled down a large bowl to fill with water and heat in the microwave. "So, basically, anything you say to me, you just say to me, but anything you say to Henry, you say to both of us. Of course, if you tell me something I think Henry ought to know, I will tell him. And, I won't lie to Henry- it's just not fair."
Noah abandoned the hot water duty- they hadn't needed more, after all. "I've got to go make up Henry's bed for Jonas. I'll be back in a few minutes." Noah took the back stairs up.
