When they got back to the house Brian immediately went to his Jeep to see what he could find to help out with dinner. He'd only had nonperishable items but maybe there was something. Digging through the back he found three cans of tomato soup. He carried these into the kitchen and set them down on the table, then looked at Noah.
"I thought these might help. Is there anything you need me to do?" The last time Brian had helped with a dinner for more than just two people was several years ago when he arrived early for one of the "family" dinners at Debbie's. She'd enlisted him in the kitchen immediately and he didn't do too bad. She'd only smacked him upside the head one time, which he considered a big accomplishment. On the whole, though, Brian was mediocre at best in the kitchen, which is why he often avoided cooking.

Noah was trying to figure out how to thaw the meat in the microwave when Brain came in bearing soup for the feast. "Thank you. That's sweet," Noah said, "Are you any good with the barbecue? I could use the broiler, but the grill is just sitting there all gassed up with nowhere to go. I'd do it myself, but I tend to set things on fire with it." Noah grimaced remembering the night a week earlier he'd sacrificed an oven mitt to the grilling gods.

"I'm pretty good with a grill." Brian replied. There were some things his dad had been good for. Jack Kinney refused to let his only son get through life without knowing how to fix his own car or how to grill. "Think I should wait and get orders or just cook them all well done?" Brian asked as he started rummaging through the cabinets looking for some kind of spices to put on the meat.

Henry and Jason briefed Xander on the new arrivals on the way back to the house. Xander was happy to hear that one was a woman, happier to hear that she was a doctor - because he got the feeling that there would be a lot of need for doctors in the future and he was glad to know that at least one survived the fallout of The End of the World - and then his bubble was burst when he learned that she might be with the man she was traveling with. His happy thoughts and hormones further backed down when Henry pointed out that the pair had obviously been through some rough times and that the woman was a little bit skittish

And speaking of dogs, one poured out of the jeep and after yipping and running in excited circles around Kayla, jumping briefly on Henry despite Kayla's attempts to call it back, charged towards the porch and right into Xander’s lap. The dog barked playfully, gave Xander a huge lick on his cheek with that typical New person, play with me, play with me, I like you enthusiasm

Jason smiled as Xander's reaction to Kayla. Yep, she was a cutie all right. But she seemed pretty attached to her companion, Jonas. Then the smell hit him. Blood, fresh blood. One of them was wounded. Before he could say anything, Kayla shouted, "Jonas! You’re bleeding." The woman kicked into doctor gear and headed back to her vehicle, saying she'd get her bag. The dog followed her enthusiastically.
Jason jogged over and met her at her Hummer. "Can I help," he asked sincerely. The smell of the blood wasn't bothering him like it might have the night before. He was more concerned that the guy had more than just a scratch. The scent told him this could be a major injury and without the ability to heal or fight off infection like a wereanimal, Jonas could be in serious trouble. He gave Kayla a concerned smile and ignored the dog that had started barking like mad at his approach.

"Aunt Millie, please!" Kayla scolded the dog knowing it would do no good. While the dog apparently had taken to Kayla, she hadn't taken to listening to Kayla. Aunt Millie only listened to Jonas marginally better.
She reflexively stiffened at Jason's approach, then gave herself a mental slap for doing it. So far, Henry and Jason had been nothing but hospitable, and Aunt Millie even liked the unnamed man with the eye patch, and hadn't started going nuts until Jason followed her. His offer sounded sincere and Kayla wondered if he had any first aid or EMS training, or was simply trying to be helpful

Brian managed to finally find the dog cowering under a bush outside the house. He put his hand out and let her smell him, smiling when she decided that he wasn't a threat. He then reached out and picked her up.
"You're shaking...what happened?" Not that the dog could answer, but he started to wonder what could have scared the dog this badly. This, of course, got him worrying. Even though the dog was small, it probably took a lot to scare her this badly. He carried her over and sat down on the porch, sitting her in his lap. Brian gently petted her as he let his mind wander off, staring blankly ahead, his eyes not really focused on anything.
(perfect situation for someone to scare the shit out of him lol)

Xander knew that Henry was helping Dr. Hotness -- and he gave himself a mental smack for calling her that -- tend to what Xander truly hoped was not her boyfriend, and that Noah was in the kitchen and Jason was playing errand boy. He'd seen enough injury to know that sometimes it was best just to stay out of the way. To that effect, he'd taken a walk around the yard and the yards of the nearby houses. Not really looking for anything, just to get a feel of the place. There was a slim chance that they'd be here awhile and he knew it was best to be familiar with the terrain.
He came back to see Brian on the porch with that "wascaly dog" in his lap. Walking up, Xander shook his head, "Boy, she sure is a fickle mistress. Left me for better ear scratches already."

Brian jumped slightly at the sound of Xander's voice. He'd totally zoned out and hadn't even noticed the other man walk up.
"I'm sure she'll take what she can get." Brian smirked a little, though he didn't stop petting the dog. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to, and I normally wouldn't ask but things have been less than normal as of late so.....um......what happened to your eye?" Curiosity had gotten the better of him.

"Knitting accident?" Xander volunteered. He was glad that Brian returned his smirk, because he was racking his mind for a way to tell Brian the short, abbreviated story while staying away from Super!Vampires, Slayers and Ultimate Evil in order to avoid freaking him out more.
"Evil wanna be cult leader," Xander said finally. "Decided that I'd look better as a pirate." He shrugged, "Happened about three years ago. Right before my hometown turned into a sinkhole. You know, sometimes I think I must have been a real asshole in a former life."
The last was said with Xander's usual escapism-lightness.
