The Limits To Final Fantasy Debate

Ok so I have a pretty neat debate topic that was inspired by my good friend (wakka_luver), so I owe him one for the topic. We had a very brief conversation regarding the upcoming Final Fantasy games of the future. In our conversation I was informed that Final Fantasy 13 is in the making, along with a handful of other Final Fantasy games. Here is where the ( Read more... )

I agree with the majority that there are just too many sequels and spin-offs. I mean, does FF12 really NEED a sequel? No, not really. Did 10 even need a sequel?

And while remakes are nice, the market has become flooded with them recently. All of the old FF's (and Tactics) are being remade, yet again.

If Square is going to keep each new game exciting and interesting, then I will continue to be a devoted fan of the series. But with all theses spin-offs, it's hard to keep track of which ones actually ARE worth playing, and which are just a waste of time.

I think I'm fine with it, but I don't like this whole multiple games for one number thing. Stop making a gazillion spin off from the same universe, Square. I like to play 13, then 14, then 15, and etc. Not something like 13, 13.2, 13.5, 13: side story, etc. It gets a bit too much - and tiring.

I am not sure what I think on the whole thing, there's more to the issue than just "Can it really last 'til a FF15?", simply because of the various issues people have already brought up - sequals and remakes and all that.

Now I am sure everyone in this fandom knows that if it has a different number, it's not a sequal in the true sense - it's not a continuation of the plot of the game with the previous number. However, Square is really starting to get into making actual sequals now, after X-2 and the FFVII Compilation.

Is this a good thing? That can be seen from both points of view. I get the impression that fans would have been very welcoming of continuations of both FFVII and FFVIII. FFVII got it, but reaction amongst diehard fans of the game is a bit mixed due to retcons and plotholes involved in the Compilation.

So I don't see sequals as inheritly bad - I was always considering getting a gameboy of some sort so I don't see Revenant Wings too badly as it polarised my decision towards getting a DS Lite. Having a DS Lite means ( ... )
