If there was one word to describe the scene at the Gardens, it was 'family-friendly'. That was the scene it was designed for, really, although many teenagers and adults were taking advantage of it as a (semi) romantic first date place, and others had stopped by too. The park wasn't too crowded, but there were a good few hundred people there, at least a third of those children; some were sitting with their parents, spellbound by the movie that was showing on the wide-projection screen, but others were more actively running around, fighting one another with novelty swords that a particularly wise vendor had started selling nearby.
The hum of the city was barely audible, even though the sound on the rather cheesy 'family movie' wasn't turned up too loud. It was a cheery, social atmosphere, lacking the chaos (and police presence) that many of the city's other celebrations had. The sun had recently set and the night was crisp although not too cold as that particular district hadn't seen any snow. The children were happy, the adults were at least content (and many a bit tipsy, although there was no alcohol on sale there), and most of the teenagers were too busy swapping saliva to notice either way.
