A quick comics post

I flipped through Battle for the Cowl at the shop. No Spoiler. Not even a cameo. DC lied to me. *le gasp*.

The end is tediously predictable. I'm glad I didn't buy it, especially with the lying about Spoiler appearing and all. Though judging from the treatment of women in this book, she would have just gotten a quick cameo with all the other girls as ( Read more... )

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about Lucy Lane. One one hand, I like that she's being used again, and I think that this portrayal of her has distinct possibilities. On the other hand, it flies completely in the face of how she's been portrayed for years.

Well, she could be an imposter/brainwashed.

My theory is Jimmy Olsen "accidentally" smacking her around in the Silver Age drove her to madness.

My confusion mostly stems from the fact that, all of a sudden, she doesn't seem to pay any attention to her husband and child, despite the fact that they were referenced as still being a family after Infinite Crisis (so it's not like a Superboy-Prime thing, either).

Maybe he's secretly related to the Joker or something.

You're probably too young to remember, but they tried that with Anarky about ten years ago. Suggested he was The Joker's lost son. It didn't take.

Neither did the series, which lasted all of 8 issues and had no lasting effect other than making the one other Green Lantern ring in existance at the time besides Kyle Rayner's disappear.

I just thought it would be so dramatically hilarious if they did that with Jason, considering the "DEATHHHBYCROWBAR" thing. It would be glorious to watch the trainwreck.

she would have just gotten a quick cameo with all the other girls as they all sat back and let the men handle things!

Except that early on what happens is that Nightwing says to the whole gang (which is pretty much all the good guys that have been on the covers, though I'm sure I saw Spoiler) "you guys handle the gang wars and figure out who's behind all this mess. Huntress, you're in charge!" and then goes to find Tim, which is when he runs in to Jason.

So, essentially, the women and the extended network (organized by Batgirl), are the ones who are actually doing all the work and putting out fires all over Gotham. And then you have the mess that Tim, Dick and Jason are in.

Also, Jason has issues. I never would have guessed! I wonder what his dark secret will be! A secret darker than getting his head beat in with a crowbar and then blown up while his Mom watched in a bored fashion? Maybe he's secretly related to the Joker or something.Actually, he made it sound as though it was something in his life before he even met Bruce, which ( ... )

But those are not important characters, and we the audience are not invited to know or care anything about them or invest in them in any way, because they're incidental to the true, important story of our heroes. Having all the women doing "other stuff offpanel" adds them to the faceless mass, diminishing their relevance and status in the mythos.

Oh, I agree with that point, definitely. I just find it funny (in that sad, unfunny way) that despite all that, you just know post-BftC, there'll probably be references to how Dick and Tim (and uhg, Damien) had to bring Gotham back from the brink of ruin all on their own.

Why am I not surprised that Battle for the Cowl was all about the male characters or that Teen Titans has resorted to shock value deaths again? Oh, DC, you never change, do you?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole "Supergirl is good now" thing. When did it stop sucking?

Dude, a comic writer friended you? That's awesome!

It stopped sucking as soon as Sterling Gates came on. I was just as shocked. It's been a really amazing transformation, and Supergirl is one of my favorite titles now. And it's even being reflected in other titles! And like I said, the shorts under her skirt are a permanent fixture and the artist is fantastic! DC really fixed her up, I'm impressed.

And it is awesome! I am still awash with glee, especially since I love his work so.

I'd reccomend it. Of course, a couple of them have to do with the New Krypton crossover, but the other books are decent enough as well, for a crossover...
