A quick comics post

I flipped through Battle for the Cowl at the shop. No Spoiler. Not even a cameo. DC lied to me. *le gasp*.

The end is tediously predictable. I'm glad I didn't buy it, especially with the lying about Spoiler appearing and all. Though judging from the treatment of women in this book, she would have just gotten a quick cameo with all the other girls as ( Read more... )

she would have just gotten a quick cameo with all the other girls as they all sat back and let the men handle things!

Except that early on what happens is that Nightwing says to the whole gang (which is pretty much all the good guys that have been on the covers, though I'm sure I saw Spoiler) "you guys handle the gang wars and figure out who's behind all this mess. Huntress, you're in charge!" and then goes to find Tim, which is when he runs in to Jason.

So, essentially, the women and the extended network (organized by Batgirl), are the ones who are actually doing all the work and putting out fires all over Gotham. And then you have the mess that Tim, Dick and Jason are in.

Also, Jason has issues. I never would have guessed! I wonder what his dark secret will be! A secret darker than getting his head beat in with a crowbar and then blown up while his Mom watched in a bored fashion? Maybe he's secretly related to the Joker or something.Actually, he made it sound as though it was something in his life before he even met Bruce, which ( ... )

But those are not important characters, and we the audience are not invited to know or care anything about them or invest in them in any way, because they're incidental to the true, important story of our heroes. Having all the women doing "other stuff offpanel" adds them to the faceless mass, diminishing their relevance and status in the mythos.

Oh, I agree with that point, definitely. I just find it funny (in that sad, unfunny way) that despite all that, you just know post-BftC, there'll probably be references to how Dick and Tim (and uhg, Damien) had to bring Gotham back from the brink of ruin all on their own.

Yes, what you said.

Somewhere in the BtfC post on IJ, someone told me that it was originally supposed to be a six-issue series written by Winick, then they cut it down to three and gave it to Daniel. Between that change and the possibility that they changed their minds about making Babs Batgirl, they may have had to scramble to make ends meet, so to speak.

If that is the case, then I can forgive them (especially since this crap can easily get washed away into the sea of future continuity). But honestly, the more I think about it, I think Sirens is supposed to be kind of a replacement for BoP. And that sucks ass. If Babs is a supporting character in Batgirl, that's fine, that makes sense. But I am going to be royally pissed off if there is no book where Oracle is in the lead with a team.

I looked at the page and didn't see Spoiler. Maybe I missed her though.

I meant to write "I'm not sure I saw Spoier, though". Sorry!

Ah. I scanned the IGN preview. No Spoiler on that page. at all. But LYNX was. And Lynx is a VILLIAN! What the hell was she doing there?

Because...I don't know, maybe Daniel just skimmed Robin and assumed Lynx was working with them, since Spoiler did try to make a temporary truce, IIRC. (Actually, if he did only just skim Robin and Nightwing, that would explain their personality switch in the first BftC issue.)
