DC Comics vs Asian Americans

So,a casual observer might be inclined to think-- what does DC have against Asians?

Cassandra Cain is currently stuck in limbo after having her character utterly crapped on for the longest time- evil, then given a terrible miniseries by the guy who turned her evil- and her role's been taken over by her white best friend.

You know, I think a part of DC's problem is they've got such a small audience in the first place. If they had a bigger audience, you could potentially be publishing stories about Jaime Reyes and Ted Kord simultaneously. Cass and Babs and Steph could all have their own solo titles, and every frickin' Green Lantern could have their own ( ... )

Try to imagine what Ryan Choi's girlfriend must be feeling right now... supergirls_pal May 18 2010, 05:38:45 UTC
I became a Giganta fan because of her relationship with Ryan Choi. Giganta liked Ryan for who he was, and I was happy for them. It was frustrating that we did not see more of Ryan and Giganta together aside from the occassional mention or two.

I hope we get to see Giganta find those responsible for the death of her lover. She is now part of another team attached to Secret Six and Gail has said on CBR that she will shine in #25, so it will be interesting to see how things develop in that title.

In general, the media has a poor portrayal of Asian Americans, so it's no surprise that DC comics - or any comic book company - lacks Asian American characters.

Have you heard of "Chew" by Image Comics? It has an Asian protagonist in it, and I've been meaning to read it. Don't know what it's about though, but I'm willing to check it out.

About your adopted cousin -- that's really awesome you recognize some of the stuff that a lot of Asian American adoptees go through. I'm adopted from China myself!

Also, when and where is the Heroes Con? I'm totally pulling for you to call DC on this....but no pressure, do as you feel! I don't know if even I'd have the guts to do that. haha

I have to wonder if Johns and Co even realizes how this is coming across. I mean I didn't really see that 'White Power' a racial thing because the White Light was explicitly a combination of all the other colors. But the constant need to regress to Bronze Age* status of characters is annoying, and quite frankly mistyfing considering that most of those characters were less interesting than their modern peers.

*DC really isn't trying to return to the Silver Age. The Silver Age was defined by wild, insane stories and little appreciation of continuity. Most of DC's current output is the exact opposite of that.
