Peter and Victor

There's an old parody going around illustrating some of the reasons people refuse the gospel of Jesus Christ. In it, two missionaries knock on someone's door and try to persuade them to "kiss Hank's ass" with them, "Hank" being the story's representation of God. It's quite clever and it illustrates the points very well. However, some ideas and ( Read more... )

A little too honest and nuanced to fit the parody genre of "kiss Hank's ass", since I can see the perspective of both characters and feel what it's like to be in their shoes. You expressed it very well -- Peter's real issue is pride and the bit about "extraordinary claims" and so forth is a diversion.

I remember being upset that God didn't "show up at my doorstep" in an obvious way when I was racked with doubts several years ago. Then there was one day, a while later on, when I did sense God in a more concrete way. My instant reaction was -- "I'm so great! I know God is real! I am great and everyone should know!". That showed me that I'm kept at a distance from God in those obvious ways because it's his way of protecting me from my pride...

I'm glad i was able to get my thoughts across. I'm really proud of this piece because i was trying to work on believable dialogue and effectively communicating specific ideas, and the response tells me i'm moving in the right direction. So first off, thanks for your input. :)

As soon as you have an experience, it's easy to fall into pride of experience. It's subtle and insidious in how it shuns discipline and authority and develops into serious theological flaws, spiritual presumption and pretention. It's awesome how in each of our unique personal cases, GOD protects us from ourselves in the perfect way. In Peter's case, i wonder whether any experience could ever convince him to leave his house.

You know I have a world or respect for you but this has many flaws. The symbolism could be an argument for any religious or spiritual message. I mean it could be a valid parable for something gross, like Islam or Martha Stewart.

Well written though.

The differences between Christianity and Islam and Martha Stewart are too many to list. Neither Islam nor Martha Stewart make the kinds of claims that Christianity does. For example (trying to stay within what i wrote), Islam doesn't promise to help you clean up your life, it only gives you a guideline of how to do it. Martha Stewart doesn't want to know you, she wants you to pay her for a couple good ideas. The same kind of attitude Peter had could be used to reject a lot of things, yes, but it isn't the attitude so much as the attitude compared to the opportunity Peter is missing. Do you see what i mean?

Glad you think it's well written. Dialogue is a weak point in my writing so i've been working on it. :)
