Great article in the Economist about California's ungovernability.

The Economist isn't half as good as it's fanclub claims it is, but this article is fantastic, and it describes the issues we have here with 2/3 majority, budget lockouts, gerrymandering, democracy by ballot propostion and such. Additionally, it is in plain english.

Sadly this is very, very true. However, I fear a constitutional convention because there is as much of a chance it will get hijacked by the whack pack Right, aka the Yacht Party. What I would like to see is the feds step in, put the state under federal receivership, and restore the rule of our progressive majority.

At this point, thanks to the wingnuts, a small group of state senators and assemblypersons are able to logjam the entire rest of the state legislature. And all the while, Ahnuld der Gropenfuhrer has sat back and watched. He might not share the entire agenda of the Yacht Party but he's supportive enough.

I know the Founders didn't think much of majority rule. But they certainly would not approve of the rule of a fanatical minority tacitly supported by a weak, ineffectual steroid case of a Governator.

But the problem isn't with the man, it's with the position and I don't think it helps your case to call names. The Governor's only direct interaction with the legislative branch is through advocacy of propositions and direct democracy ( ... )
