I don't think anorexia or bulimia or the like should be insured by health insurance company. I also don't think it should be considered a mental disorder. cutting isn't a mental disorder: it's something a person does in response to emotions. it's something people can control. a person has to think "hey, I'm going to shove a toothbrush down my ( Read more... )

I actually did a project on this last year, and I learned that you're half right and half wrong. People with Anorexia are not usually aware of their disease because it starts off as a mental condition. It begins with manic depression and then esclates from there. Those who are bulimic are fully aware of what they are doing, and it is because they honestly see themselves as being overweight. Most of the time though, it is caused by past regressions of depression or current surroundings. But a lot of times, it is just prissy girls wanting to look like a model.

I fully agree with you. Anorexia and bulimia arn't DISEASES. It's just something people DO. And they do it because they're depressed. So they should be treated for that. But they also need to "learn" how to eat again. But I think family should help with that part.

I mean that they are suffering from another mental illness.

either way, it is always possible for an anorexic/bulimic to say, "I am going to stop these actions". if they can't, then they lack self-control. it's not something their body is physically forced to do; it's something they must choose.

It is not something they choose. And no, there body isn't physically forced to, their mind forces them to. Yes, it is because they lack self-control that they can't stop, but the lack of control in their life is often what bring girls to an eating disorder in the first place. I recommend you read some books about anorexia and bulimia before you say that is isn't a legitimate disease although it is recognized as one by doctors everywhere.

okay then. you don't have to be defensive about it or anything; it was just my opinion on my journal, & I think there's absolutely no problem with saying anything I want to here.
