thoughts?

I don't think anorexia or bulimia or the like should be insured by health insurance company. I also don't think it should be considered a mental disorder. cutting isn't a mental disorder: it's something a person does in response to emotions. it's something people can control. a person has to think "hey, I'm going to shove a toothbrush down my ( Read more... )

What about people with obsessive compulsive disorder? They can't help continually washing there hands because of a mental disease which forces them to into believing that they are never clean enough ( ... )

I mean that they are suffering from another mental illness.

either way, it is always possible for an anorexic/bulimic to say, "I am going to stop these actions". if they can't, then they lack self-control. it's not something their body is physically forced to do; it's something they must choose.

It is not something they choose. And no, there body isn't physically forced to, their mind forces them to. Yes, it is because they lack self-control that they can't stop, but the lack of control in their life is often what bring girls to an eating disorder in the first place. I recommend you read some books about anorexia and bulimia before you say that is isn't a legitimate disease although it is recognized as one by doctors everywhere.

okay then. you don't have to be defensive about it or anything; it was just my opinion on my journal, & I think there's absolutely no problem with saying anything I want to here.

I'm sorry if you feel like I'm attacking you, but I feel passionately about this subject. I never said there was anything wrong with expressing your opinion in your own journal, in fact, your journal is one of my favorites to read. However, when posting about controversial issues, you should expect some people to disagree with you ;)

:) I don't mind people disagreeing with me, but it also puts me in a difficult position when someone I like a lot is calling me ignorant. I really wish I could just post what I'd like & be at peace, but next time I'll probably just disable comments altogether because I put it up here as my random thoughts, & whether anyone agrees with it or not, I don't really want to discuss much of anything in my journal with other people. that applies to most of my stuff, really -- I'm generally glad I don't get a lot of comments on my journal, because usually I'm just processing & accepting my own feelings & validating them for myself, & it's uncomfortable to try to explain it to others or hear their thoughts.

I never intended to imply that I thought you were ignorant and I apologize that it came out that way. The title of this post, however, led me to believe that you were wanting other people's thoughts on the topic, but apparently not, I'm sorry for misinterpreting the purpose of your post.

oh, I'm sorry! I didn't realize it came out that way. I meant it to say they were my thoughts, but I wasn't sure if "thoughts" was the perfect way to describe it. gah, I never think of how things sound.
