Graduate School Decision

It's looking like about a 99% chance that we're going to Utah State, then. The department chair told me he couldn't do anything, but suggested that I talk to the graduate coordinator, and even suggested an argument. That was nice of him ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, a lot of graduate school stuff is more about 'will this student make us look good?' or 'how much of this student's research will I be able to use as my own?' than actually imparting knowledge. I see it all the time here at my local university, and I'm sad (but not really surprised) to see what looks like the same thing happening at BYU, too. At some point, it stops becoming a venture in teaching and turns instead into a venture of money making. (Although some could argue that the continuing education system stopped being about teaching a long, long time ago.)

Sucks you have to go through this, man. I'd stick with the places that actually want you.

Yeah, just that excerpt was rather aggravating. Especially since he knows you...the jerk. Well, at least you can just say 'good riddance' to all the ridiculousness that is BYU and move on to new ridiculousness up in Logan. (dang, I'm optimistic ^o-)

But hey, at least all this ridiculousness will lead to some nice money making in the future, right?

^O^

Well, you can try talking to your coordinator in person, see if it changes anything.

Also, if you would be willing to do research for free, that may make adviser change his opinion. I am not paid by my lab, for instance.

No, the deal was that I was already going to work for free. I don't think talking to him in person is going to change anything, and frankly, if he's going to respond to me like this in an email, then I'm not interested in talking to him. He knows very well who I am, and shouldn't have responded that way if he wanted to keep my respect.
