"I saw one serious-looking guy in a group that looked like serious business powerlunchers in suits give her several surreptitious waves while keeping his face completely unsmiling."

Ah. She was obviously engaged in tense negotiations with those business folk, and the waves were his way of letting her know that the discussion was turning in her favor. ;-)

Seriously, though, a Japanese burger joint? That just sounds strange. Though I suppose I've seen weirder things in my time (such as Genghis Cohen, the Jewish Chinese restaurant...).

Hmm, it's very hard for me to describe this Umami Burger place. The burgers aren't really Japanese, per se...more like gourmet California fusion burgers. The ingredients are VERY tasty.

We did have a pickle plate where the pickles were done in Japanese and Korean style rather than conventional U.S. dill pickles. They went well with the meal. But they also have stuff like regular fries, sweet potato fries and some very fancy ice cream and cake desserts.

Take a look here for more:

They are pricey but really quite good, and the flavors are just different enough from traditional burger places to make it an entertaining experience.

Oh! Right. "Umami" is the name of the "fifth taste". I had forgotten that. (If you're interested, the article about it is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umami)

Okay, so that makes a lot more sense. Thank you. :) (Might try going there next time I'm up that way.)
