The NY Post article implied this was a decision by writer James Robinson after editorial mandated that Scott be young, and therefore childless, and thus retconned Obsidian out of existence.

The publicity spin around it reeks to high Heaven, but I'll choose to give Robinson (who I admit has a less than stellar track record) at least the benefit of the doubt with this.

It didn't go "let's appease the gays and throw them Alan Scott!" like it seems they did, but more "Wait, removing one gay hero from continuity? FINE. I'll make his Dad gay instead."

Which - doesn't change the facts but makes it more palatable to me. I'll be reading Earth-2 until it's proven a bad title.

But the DC spin doctors can go fuck themselves.

I'm not buying it.

"The NY Post article implied this was a decision by writer James Robinson after editorial mandated that Scott be young, and therefore childless, and thus retconned Obsidian out of existence."

Even still Scott can be young and have young children who are gay.

And I guarantee you the only reason DC signed off on this was because of Kevin Keller's success.

"It didn't go "let's appease the gays and throw them Alan Scott!" like it seems they did, but more "Wait, removing one gay hero from continuity? FINE. I'll make his Dad gay instead.""

But see the problem I have with that is like it would be saying all the crap they did to Cassandra Cain is fine because they still have another multiracial character of Asian descent in the Bat family.

And Scott and his bf were as stereotypical as all get out from the strip I read (I read a much longer one on another site). Neither Robinson or DC were doing gays any favors.

As far as I'm concerned, they can all go to hell. I'm not wasting my money on that shit.

All valid points - especially the first one. DC hates parents for some reason, so refuses to let any of its heroes either have them or be them. Which is a whole other rant.

But see the problem I have with that is like it would be saying all the crap they did to Cassandra Cain is fine because they still have another multiracial character of Asian descent in the Bat family.

I don't mean to frame it quite like that. Because it's not fine what they did to Cass, and it's not fine what they did to Obsidian, Anissa Pierce, Grace Choi or my beloved Renee.
Damn, I miss Renee.
I just am thinking of it as being one title trying to do something in a shitty situation. Because that stops me from putting a fist through a wall in blind rage.

And Scott and his bf were as stereotypical as all get out from the strip I read
Yeeeah. That's a whole other kettle of fish. Poor writing isn't going to do anyone any favors.

"Damn, I miss Renee."

Explain to me how in the blue hell this woman has not gotten her own ongoing series. It's bullshit.

Yeaaaah why am I not surprised that the hype was not nearly as impressive as the actuality? If they're going to go with Green Lantern why THIS one? Why the most obscure? Why the most forgotten? Why with these most telling traits?

This comes off as a snarky in joke they're making.

Oh, GAG me.

I loved Alan Scott as an older superhero. So now they're not only doing half-assed gay characters, but they're also erasing characters of age. What was wrong with having him be a well-preserved elderly man in current day? He STILL has his responsibilities and powers and has to cope SOMEHOW, right?

What makes him ANY different from any other young hero now? I mean, other than the fact that he kisses boys on-camera. Which, OMG, the writing on those excerpts? Made me roll my eyes so hard I may never be able to get them out from the back of my skull.

The more mainstream comics change things, the more things stay exactly the same. GAH.
