The roof was Shikamaru's sanctuary. It was a place he escaped to even when nothing in particular was bothering him. It gave the best view of the sky, and the clouds in particular. Even now, with the January air so icy his ears went numb, he preferred to be on the roof than cooped up inside. The apartment had begun to feel very small since he'd returned to it. And yet, as he continued to mourn the deaths of the Zeroes, something about the world felt empty, too.
He watched the clouds drifting along, darker grey on grey. Wintry blandness. That was fine. He didn't feel like blue skies. He was A-OK with leaving blue skies back in fucking Elysium. Ready to turn his back on that fake perfect world.
Yosuke was here. Talking. Shikamaru listened, even if he kept his back to the surface of the roof and continued to gaze at the sky above. An odd thing to worry about seeing as both of them appeared to be happy not being particularly close to the other

He wasn't mad at Yosuke. The comments about Madara hadn't been forgotten but Shikamaru had seen that token attempt to break off the relationship on the network. It was probably a lie but keeping up that lie would be as good as truth for now. It would keep Yosuke away from Akatsuki. That was all Shikamaru wanted

Upon seeing his friend's face, Yosuke opened his mouth to say something before realizing that it would be stupid to ask if Shika had been crying, or ask if he wanted to talk about it. He returned to scratching the back of his head and wished that he was smarter. It seemed a little tactless to just outright ask something like that, but he felt like someone had to ask these difficult sort of questions. Everyone seemed to have closed themselves off in the apartment. The little family that they made wasn't quite coming apart as it did feel like it was drifting away. He searched the ground for a few seconds, thinking about what he could say. Like the words would appear on the roof
