Introducing an obsession: Asian TV drama

Apr 28, 2009 14:41

Let me introduce my obsession: Asian TV drama. Specifically Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese ones. (And the Taiwanese shows don't get enough love!)

This is mini-reviews of most of the dramas I've watched so far. Please note that I don't necessarily recommend all of these - if you're new to drama, I'd say chose something rated 4/5 or higher.

omg I loved it bb, adding like ALL of these to my must-watch list since I've only seen the popular Kdramas (BOF, Goong, part of Coffee Prince and Witch, Kim Samsoon) and part of Hana Kimi. I grew up on Filipino dramas lol so this is really helping me learn about new shows. Yay!

Yay, I'm glad it can be of use for someone! I'm not exactly reccing all of these (only stuff rated 3/5 and above maybe?), but most of them have been fairly popular, so even though I might not have loved them all, there's a good chance someone else will. :)

Filipino dramas? :O Are they good? I know nothing about Filipino dramas. Any recs? Places to find them?

also? You need to see ALL of Coffee Prince!! Like, NOOOW. xD

Wow this is really helpful and detailed. I'm still new to K-Fandom so I've only seen Hana Yori Dango, some of Coffee Prince and very little of BOF. So I need to watch... all of these =P. Nodame Cantabile looks interesting

It got... a little detailed, yeah. >_<

Only a 3rd of these are Korean, so I'm not sure how much this will help you navigate the k-fandom (I'm a newbie too!) but I could never just stick to Korean shows. There so much good stuff coming out of all of Asia.

Nodame is completely whacky. But also adorable. If you watch the clip I linked to there, you'll probably get a feel for it, if it's your cup of tea or not.

YAY! awesome list, thank you for compiling it! ♥
i used to watch taiwanese/chinese dramas when i was little (idk what they were saying, but they intrigued my 8-year-old mind), so seeing the reviews brought back memories, haha.

coffee prince is SO good! i watched it during my spring break and sometimes i stayed up until early in the morning watching it because i was addicted to it, hah.

nodame cantabile is the best j-drama i've ever seen. well written, good storyline, actors are a+. i've watched it 2 1/2 times already. XD

oh goodness....kurosagi. i just couldn't get into it. i think i got to episode 4 and i couldn't find the other eps, but i didn't mind because it wasn't that good to me. maybe i'll give it another chance since i love yamapi and maki, but idk. :/

kimi wa petto i never go to complete, but i loved the first episode. hana kimi = <3 and orange days seems interesting too ( ... )

YAY! Long comment! :D (You'll get an equally long answer, that okay?)

If you ever feel nostalgic I dare you to watch some Taiwanese shows. Some are actually really good, you just have to get used to the lighting/sound being a little bit off sometimes. And people screaming in Chinese... xD

Coffee Prince IS good. I made my sis watch it with me. She loved it too. :D

Totally! I really need to watch it again soon. It's all-around awesomecakes. :D

My friend had the eppies on her external harddrive and gave them to me, but if she hadn't, I'm not sure I would have finished it either. I haven't finished the movie yet... I don't really think you're missing out. It's mostly people being ( ... )

LOL, yeah, Taiwanese shows are something else. I understand why some people don't like them, but there's just soo much awesomeness hiding in all that loud crack. :D

Hiro's acting was def akward. don't know if it was because he was supposed to be a butler I thought of that too, but you know, it still didn't work. xD

Haha, it IS kind of nice when other people agree, yeah.

the ending in the movie was cheesy, but i still squeeled like a silly fangirl LOL.LOL I knoooow. xD I'm very okay with them getting married, I just thought it was a little over-the-top...

*opens up dramawiki to check out your recs* I've never heard of kamisama! That sounds interesting! What else? Pride is totally a show I've been planning on watching! And Love Shuffle! Everyone's been raving about it, it feels like, I definitely need to see it. I had planned for it to finish airing before I watch but I realize now it laready has. Wow, times flies by. xD

Thanks so much for the recs! :D (Do a review post, yesssss! :D)

Love is very good word *nod*

I'm happy you made this, I haven't watched that many kdramas so this will be useful :)

Well I guess I'm the opposite with you on this, I actually didn't love coffee prince until the last part of the drama, around ep 12 or 13.
I haven't finished taiwanese Hana Kimi, I stopped at ep9 a long time ago, since I heard the ending was bad, but since you gave it 5/5 I'll have to give it another chance.
oh, and I agree completely about Nodame Cantabile, the SPs are good too, which is rare for jdramas.
And, yes, Naktasu is beyond amazing, I didn't understand how Mizuki could like boring Sano and not him :(

It's quite all right to feel differently about coffee prince. :)

TW Hana Kimi has a pretty bad ending yeah. But I didn't mind it so much because I had just watched the Japanese version where Sano gets the girl (although I hated it then, lol). I admit I'm kind of biased when it comes to TW Hana kimi, hence the 5/5 rating.

totally!

Nakatsu! ♥
