Breaking news: ... Ah, whatever

Oct 22, 2007 10:40

I guess it's a good thing that the fandom imploded on a weekend I didn't have the time to be online longer than half an hour at a piece - and by "didn't have the time" I mean I was physically unable to - otherwise there's always time - so I couldn't spend 60 hours straight discussing Dumbledore's public outing ( Read more... )

Heh, I really don't have anything to contribute besides a WORD on all you said.

Especially the bit about it not being some random character. God, can you imagine the reaction if it had been *Lockhart*, or something?

Lockhart is definitely a closet case *loves him to bits*

Oh, while reading the books I definitely flashed to several outrageously camp characters from TV/movies, but I'm glad she didn't chose him to out, because...yeah. There's enough of that stereotype in popular culture.

The gay wise older mentor is definitely refreshing though. :)

I definitely agree. I think that Snape found himself with a horrible crush on Lockhart, some of their scenes together scream "MUTUAL ATTRACTION!" Sadly JK said we'd hear no more about Lockhart, I think he's my favourite character.

I think that Dumbledore has had many flings in his life, it makes sense. I think that he had a bit of a fling with Slughorn, that scene smacks of "do this for me.... c'mon we shagged a few times and had fun so come and do me a favour..."

*snuggles Dumbledore*

I agree! I already had this thought since the outing! Something about their interaction...

Fascinatingly gay men seem to live longer in the Potterverse. Hm.

I think that Doge and Dumbledore were a couple, there's just something about it that says to me that they were a couple. Dumbledore died and Doge fells alone now because Dumbledore never publicly acknowledged that they were together and Doge realises that it was never probably love.

It's all the extra protein in their diets :P

That's how I see it, too. He's a poor bastard, but a healthy one! ;)

So how many people used a "Dumbledore" tag for the first time in their life in the last few days?

*raises hand*

I love this picture of the Dumbledore/Doge you've painted. Now I really can't wait to read angst-filled fanfic in which poor Elphias struggles with knowing that the man he loved was really in love with someone else.

His letters told me little of his day-to-day life, which I guessed to be frustratingly dull for such a great wizard

Maybe it's just me, but I can read it as Dumbledore purposely leaving the Gellert bits out because he knew they'd make Elphias jealous. And Doge coming back to find out that Albus had been doing all thses things with Grindelwald that he'd never written about and then feeling hurt and angry. Okay, I'm going to stop now. :-)

It's as valid as not seeing that Ron/Hermione is not perfectly platonic was before HBP (if anyone can follow this sentence) - it's simply wrong. You know, I thought people who refused to admit the Ron/Hermione hints were oblivious. But the fact is there's always going to be ( ... )

That's a good point! I guess that's a good way to see it and you're definitely right that one shouldn't just assume homophobia.

Although, I do think that for a lot of people a heteronormative worldview is a big reason why they didn't see gay Dumbledore and this outing is therefore a welcome wake up call. This includes me. I suddenly see Albus/Elphias much clearer now. No reason not to take Elphias' words at face value and to treat heavily implied gayness as some sort of insider joke for the informed slasher, only because you didn't buy the book knowing (and being hit over the head by the promotion) that it's going to feature homosexuality.

Of course another big reason for people not seeing it is that his sexuality is really not the most important/remarkable revelation about Dumbledore in the book. There was a lot to digest that was actually spelled out in the text. So really, I'm not trying to give the heteronormative stuff too much credit.

Maybe it's just me, but I can read it as Dumbledore purposely leaving the Gellert bits out ( ... )

I'm just hopping in here, not even being on your flist, since I've been snooping around a bit and saw your comment on the comment notifications. I got a reply from you on that thread on sistermagpie's journal and can't reply because it now is flocked. I was just playing with ideas, nothing serious with that soul thingy. :)

Ah, that's flocked now? I wouldn't have seen your reply there anyway (lj >:( Shape up! I was getting notifications for a few hours but it stopped again. Maybe now that I complained about it again...)

Do hop in any time! :)

Yep, Österreich. (Haha, Winnetou!
