The Katrina Replicant Meme! Check it out, and check out the rare appearance of my actually using the word meme to describe the not-meme that this and ALL OTHER SO-CALLED MEMES ARE...but that's ranting for another day. Here's the deal. The fellow behind Real Kato Online, Ken, will donate $5 to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, once I post this ( Read more... )

One penny down. :)

Just remember to scurry over and let Ken know if you're playing along with the rest of it.

I figure, any help is help. You know? And I can't not help...obviously, for whatever reason, I'm connected, even if it's just the newsjunkie in me.

Hey, every bit helps! And most importantly, you're continuing the chain-of-idea-spreading-that-shouldn't-be-called-a-meme-but-it-is. Thanks so much!

See, I'm just absurdly picky, is the thing. Meme, as a term, specificially refers to viral language, the thoughts and concepts that, for good or bad, overwhelm our defenses against them and become part of our thought processes.

Most LJ--or other blog--"memes" are anything but--they're lists of answerable questions, online quizzes you can take to determine the color of your underwear, classification tests to push you forward into deeper niche thinking. Memes are separate. Memes are viral thoughts.

...anyway. Sorry. Maybe that's become part of my memetic processing--reacting every time someone mentions "meme". :)

Supporting those who are most in need is always a good use of money, no matter how small the increment. I gave seventy cents on my way to work just because I knew that a lot of people had died who didn't need to die, and the senseless acts of violence and vandalism not to mention the firebugs is just depressing because in the face of a crisis everyone should group together to fight back.

Love you loads for doing what you can with the six hundred pennies you've got.

Thanks. And yeah, I don't know if donating a penny is going to help folks, the same way that commenting on entries that promised a dollar donation helped my peace of mind...but it's something. And it's something I can do. And sure, I'm going to keep mentioning this entry, see what I get...but honestly, as soon as I realized I had six bucks to donate, those became donateable funds. So--whether or not I get six hundred comments--I'll still trip down to Lowe's at some point and donate what I've got. I have to, in a sense. I can't not.
