[PUBLIC] Degrassi 904: Close To Me

Oct 12, 2009 01:01

While 901 and 902 provided us with lots of foreshadowing for future plotlines, 904 was almost entirely set up...
Not as good as I wanted it to be, but while in the end it may be a forgettable entry in season 9, it will help those future plotlines feel more thought out, less rushed.

Part of this review was written at two o'clock in the morning, and the rest was written in the waiting room of my car service center so, just something to keep in mind. -_-;

Anyway, Here we go!

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR CLOSE TO ME. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW, TURN BACK NOW!

Degrassi: The Next Generation 904: Close To Me

A-Plot Summary: Things between Jane and Spinner have become very cozy. So much so that Spinner has changed his plans to go to police college and asks Jane to move in with him in his swanky new pad aka Peter's old place. But when a new found interest in Declan seems to offer Jane just the spice she's looking for in her life, will she go for it, or stay by Spinner's side?

A-Plot Review: wow! This plot did not play out like I thought it would. I think I would have liked DeclanxJane more if there had been more development. I think she fell for him too fast. Since this is going to be an ongoing affair, it would have made more sense to have Jane resist Declan until the end of this episode, then the cheating could be covered more 906. But half way through she actually slept with him. ummm... wow.

I thought Jane's attraction to him a was little out of character. It's always seemed like she didn't like guys like that so I wish they had pointed out something that drew her to him. At the same time, I didn't think it was that unusual that they would like each other. I just wish it had been more forwardly addressed. When she sang to him I thought it was pretty funny. He looked so young in that scene.

I did like her singing too. Paula has a good voice, she blows Jenna out of the water. I think I can live with her being in the band. But I thought it would probably have been more realistic to have Sav take over singing duties.

They did do a good job of showing signs of why Jane would be discontent with Spinner. I can understand, especially when he talked about his plans changing. Jane has really thinking about her future these past two seasons and Spin deciding to not go to police college and asking her to move in must have been shocking.

But oh did I feel for Spin! I hate cheating, I think it's of the worst things you can do. It's just so dishonest. I was tearing up when he thought she was dumping him. *wipes tear*

The Manny/Jane friendship felt more random to me than it should have. I wish they had more interaction before this episode. But it was so nice seeing Manny without Emma, and with Jay! Awwww, Janny love~

So Peter moved out, and he's out of the band. That felt a lot more natural than I thought it would. Good for Peter, he needs to get his act together. And Spinner gets an amazing new apartment! But when he showed Jane the drawer it reminded me of when Ellie moved in with Sean. That was a bit of a surreal moment for me.

I thought the scene with Holly J and Anya chatting up the band might be Spolly J foreshadowing...

Oh yeah, did you see the LARPing club ad on the school's signboard? I smell an Anya plot coming up...

B-Plot Summary: A ninth grade parents' day leaves KC feeling left out. But KC just might find a father figure in his new basketball coach.

B-Plot Review: I thought this was going to be the subplot in 903, but I forgot they filmed 903 and 904 at the same time. All and all this plot was pretty uneventful. Like the A-plot, it was a set up episode for KC's plot with his new basketball coach. I liked it though because it gave us a chance to actually meet this guy. I like that it looks like they'll slowly be building up his relationship with KC, in the long run I think it will make the plot feel more realistic.

But I was getting Jordan** vibes from the start. In the last scene when he said, "My goal is to bring out the best in my players, on and off the court." I was honestly creeped out. I think "I'm not letting you get away from me that easily." was also foreshadowing. It seems like such an innocent thing to say, but is it? I did like when he told KC cleaning up the locker room was all on him. It's the type of thing I tend to say. And if I didn't think this guy was a total pedofile I would have found it cute. It seems like this new coach will be KC's confidant for the season. I think we may see KC go to him for advice about the Clare/Jenna situation later on. Personal situations like these really give him an opening to get closer to KC.

The parent's day set up seemed really unrealistic to me (do schools actually do this in ninth grade?) but worked really well for KC's situation. They went the extra mile to show us how bad KC feels about not having a family. And I liked that instead of completely disregarding his parents they mentioned his father. It's the first time we've heard about KC's parents, but hopefully not the last. It also gave KC a little more motivation to latch on to his new coach. I did feel bad for KC after he blew the game though. I've been in a similar situation before and you just feel so bad about yourself. Then again you never saw me trash any locker rooms.

Seems like this episode was also the start of a beautiful friendship between KC and Dave. KC's profile did say he was making new friends on the basketball team, but I assumed Dave would end up hanging out with Connor. I should have known better. Dave is an obvious social climber, of course he's going to align himself with the good looking jock from the gifted class. Dave is smart enough to realize KC's triple threat status will balence out Dave's averageness. He probably wants to be KC's wingman.

I'm already thinking this new friendship will result in some strange romantic dynamic between the KC, Clare, Dave, and Jenna since I'm better we'll be seeing some Jenna/Dave and Clare/Dave action this season along with our Clare/KC/Jenna triangle. Finally a silver lining to all the Klare drama that's bound to happen.

KC may have felt bad that Dave's parents were there to support him, but if he had know Dave better he could have just pointed out that sitting right next to Dave's parents was his own adorable girlfriend. That would have hit Dave where it hurts. Too bad, KC, you missed a good opportunity there. And of course the Klare fangirl in me loved that fact that Clare was there to support him. Here's my question though: Is Dave rich? Are we supposed to assume that now? Or was it a joke? I don't think it's a bad idea especially if this KC/Dave friendship is going to last. I think it would be interesting to see the dynamic that develops since KC's living a group home. I guess we'll have to wait to see until we know more about him.

The Connor/KC moments were funny to watch since last season it was Connor who was freaking out and KC was the calm one, so this was a real role reversal. I really liked how Connor was so matter of fact about everything though. Like when he said "He told me to get you, so I'm getting you." Actually that whole conversation made me happy.

Sam's acting was really up and down. I get the feeling he must be a real nice guy in real life because he slides into that role so much easier than freak out KC. I liked the way he handled the "quiet" scenes the best.

Overall I think this is one of those episodes I probably won't rewatch unless it's on TV.

** You don't remember Jordan? You know, that guy who tried to rape Emma in the very first episode of Degrassi: The Next Generation. Oh the good old days~
