Murder Mystery Party 2012

Wow, I just... wow.  Last night was a total blast.  Major props to yagottrouble for doing this for me.  I know she went through a lot of crap putting this together, but I think it went well.  She did a lot of different stuff then the one I did for her, and I think it really caught everyone by surprise.

The theme for this party was fictional characters.

Obviously this is something with a huge time commitment so I don't recommend trying to throw one RIGHT THIS SECOND, but you and your friends could totally pull one off.

Jealous. None of my friends are anywhere near as fun. I try to convince them we should go to improv classes but they are all such boring performers

Honestly the trick is just getting them to come. The first time we did one of these most of my friends were apprehensive about it and weren't sure they were going to have fun. Once we had given them time to prepare (we gave them like a month to think about their characters and sent them lots of stuff to read and such) they were a lot more comfortable with who they were, and when the party started they knew what they had to do. We also allow for a lot of out of character questions, and we're generally pretty forgiving about mistakes, which helps a ton. This time it was even easier because they picked their own characters, and had had experience with the way the game works.
