Prologue

Satoshi was painting. He was sitting at the terrace of a beach house painting the most beautiful sunset he had ever seen in his life. The colors were incredible. He couldn't even describe it with words. The only thing left for him was to capture it on his painting. He memorized all the spectrum of colors and slowly drew the scenery on his canvas. When he painted, he put all his heart and soul into it. All his paintings were fragments of his own existance, just like all the music and lyrics he composed.

After the painting had been finished, Satoshi realized that the sky was already dark. He walked back to the house to switch on the light when a pair of hands suddenly grabbed him from behind and pointed a gun at his head.

"Don't do anything stupid, and don't even think of yelling!" the owner of the gun whispered to his ear. Satoshi just gave a simple nod and somehow his attacker understood it and slowly let him go. Satoshi just stood there, unmoving and not saying any words until his attacker told him that he could turn around so that the attacker could see his face.

Satoshi felt weird, he knew that his life was in danger, but he didn't feel any fear at all. He turned around slowly to see his attacker and surprised that what he saw was not a scary looking guy but a man with sadness and loneliness reflected in his eyes. He looked so worn out and tired, the thought of taking care of him suddenly crossed Satoshi's mind. He shook his head to eliminate that unexplainable thought immediately.

The attacker suddenly talked to him with a gentle voice, “Sorry to barge on you like that. I really need a shelter for a few days. I promise I won't do anything to hurt you.” He said it while looking at Satoshi with pleading eyes. Satoshi just nodded, who could resist those eyes anyway, he thought. “You can stay at the guest room over there.” He pointed to a closed wooden door at the back of the living room.

After that, the room fell into a dead silence. Nobody said anything or even moved for a few minutes. Only the sound of breathings could be heard. Then Satoshi suddenly remembered about his painting that was still outside at the terrace. He looked worriedly to the terrace and to his attacker. Finally he managed to gather his courage and broke the awkward silence in the room. “Uum, would you let me to collect my painting outside? I just finished it and I don't want anything to ruin the painting.” The attacker looked at him, as if he was thinking whether Satoshi would try to run away from him. “I'll go with you." He finally answered him.

Satoshi just took his painting carefully, and go back to the living room, while the man still watching him like a hawk. Then he sat down on the floor and looked at his painting once again. Unconsciously he smiled contently while imagining the beautiful sunset he had seen that evening. The painting itself was beyond imagination. The colors of red and purple mixed with a splash of orange and dark blue gave a strange calm and mysterious impression.

“You painted it yourself?” the man finally spoke. Satoshi, who was still staring at the painting, just nodded without saying anything. “It's beautiful,” he continued. This time, Satoshi turned to see him and gave him a smile, an innocent and sincere smile, the kind that the man thought was nowhere to be found in this world anymore. “What's your name?” he asked again. “I'm Ohno Satoshi, and uum what should I call you?” The man blinked at that sudden question. He was hesitating whether he should give his real name or not. After a few second, he sighed and answered, “Sho, Sakurai Sho.” Satoshi smiled again, and offered to make dinner for both of them.

Sakurai Sho never thought that his life would be so complicated. He was the only heir of his father company and never experienced hardship on his childhood and teenager days. His parents loved him and would do everything just to make him happy. Then, in just one blink of an eye, suddenly everything changed. First, he came home from work just to find his father had been brutally murdered. And before he had the chance to mourn for his father's death, he was a criminal, wanted life or dead by the whole police force in Tokyo. People had been accusing him as his father’s killer for the sake of inheritance.

He had been on the run for two days, when he found a small house near the beach that he honestly thought was empty. He allowed himself inside and that was when he saw a figure sitting at the terrace painting peacefully.  Hunger and fatigues had already taken control over his body, and he decided that he would do everything so that he could have a meal and a shelter at least for tonight.

Sho never once regretted his decision as he watched the smaller man prepared for their dinner. He thought that the man was totally weird because he didn't freak out when a stranger came and pointed a gun at his head. He knew somehow that he would freak out like crazy if the same thing happened to him. And how could he smile at him like that, after all that he had done to him, he just couldn't understand.

Satoshi had finished preparing for dinner, and they both ate on the dining table silently. After a few minutes, Sho couldn't take the silence anymore, and glanced to Satoshi, who seemed lost in his own little world. Sho cleared his throat and finally broke the silence. “Ohno-san, thanks for the food, it's delicious.” Satoshi just smiled and muttered softly, “Don’t mention it. I rarely cook for other people, so I really don't have confidence about the taste. But I guessed this one was somehow edible.” Sho smiled back at him, and decided to ask the question that had popped up in his head before.

“Ohno-san, why aren't you afraid of me? I could have killed you, you know?” Hearing the question, Satoshi tilted his head a little, as if he was thinking deeply just to answer it. “I just feel like I don't need to be afraid of you. And I don't think someone who appreciates the beauty of nature could be a bad person.”

Sho didn't expect that kind of answer. He couldn't say anything at all. While everybody else didn't believe in him and accused him as a murderer, this one stranger actually trusted him.

After a long paused, Sho finally managed to mutter a barely audible thank you and excused himself to the guest room. As much as he wanted to sleep right away, the image of Satoshi's smile wouldn't get away from his mind. At least it was the last image he remembered before he drifted into deep slumber.
