That day was one of those days when the rain poured its anger on earth. Thunder roared madly in the sky, bringing a dark and gloomy atmosphere to the university.  It was a perfect day to have a deep slumber in the dormitory, yet he had an early morning class to attend.

Waking up late in the morning with a bad hang over, it was just an ordinary bad day for Satoshi Ohno.  He glanced at his roommate’s bed and he saw Matsumoto Jun still in the midst of his beauty sleep. He hurriedly got himself ready anyway, drank a glass of coffee, and ran to his morning class.

Satoshi Ohno was a 2nd year Art Student but he also took an additional music class to complete his credits. This morning, while in his 1st day of music class, he found his mind wandering to other places. He sat near the window and stared blankly to the scenery outside, listening to the sound of the hard rain. He always loved the sound of the rain falling to the earth. It made his mind relax and he could stand hours of silence just to hear the rain.

“Ohno-san, Ohno-san!!” the professor’s voice startled him and broke into his day dreaming. “It’s nice to have you back on earth. Now please pay more attention to class.” Ohno just smiled sheepishly while muttering his apology.

Apparently, the professor was explaining about the final assignment they must do in order to pass the music class. The project assignment itself was about ‘Melody’. They had to compose music based on a certain image. It could be the sun, a lady, love, or just about anything. The professor would divide them into a pair of two persons and they must work together to finish the assignment. After that, they had to perform the music composition in front of the whole class.

Ohno didn’t have a music background, and he only played piano at a beginner’s level. He knew it would be a hard assignment for him and sighed, thinking that he would have to depend on his partner.

The professor had just started to divide them into pairs when suddenly a thoroughly soaked man opened the class door while trying to catch up his breath. He looked like he had been running all the way to the class and he was actually panting quite hard. The man said he was sorry and quickly sat down at the nearest seat near the door.

Ohno glanced at him and felt sorry for the guy. He should have skipped the class.  With his soaked hair and shirt, he could get a cold later on.

After a while, the professor called him and his partner. “Ohno Satoshi and Sakurai Sho, please raise your hand!” To his surprise, the ‘soaked guy’ also raised his hand along with him.

“So, this guy will be my partner,” Ohno thought while smiling to himself.

After the class, they greeted each other and exchanged phone numbers and email addresses. The other guy seemed to be in a hurry and Ohno didn’t want to hold him any longer, especially considering that he was still wet and needed to change clothes immediately. They promised to meet tomorrow at the nearest coffee shop to talk about their project.

Later on, Jun told him that Sakurai was some kind of celebrity within the 1st year music students. He was handsome, a talented violinist, and had tons of lady fans. He had already participated in a few recitals and received high evaluations from the critics. Ohno just thought that he was lucky enough that his partner was better in music than him and could help him completed the project.

Ohno himself was pretty famous within the art students. A few of his paintings were already exhibited in the university’s gallery of arts. Most of his paintings were surreal and abstract, but on some rare occasions, he painted people or natural objects.

The day after was a beautiful sunny day and Ohno was waiting alone at the coffee shop. He was doodling in his sketch book, drawing a few chibi characters of Jun and few of his friends. He even drew a soaked chibi Sakurai just because he found it very cute.

When Sakurai arrived, he walked straight to Ohno’s table and practically banged himself down on his chair. He looked very grumpy and mad, as if something bad just happened to him.  Not being a good talker himself, Ohno only gave Sakurai an understanding look and waited patiently for him to say something.

After drinking a cup of hot tea, Sakurai looked a little calmer than before.  “Sorry for my rudeness. I’ve had a series of bad days lately.” Ohno gave him a small smile, “It’s okay Sakurai-san. I’ve had a few bad days myself. Take your time.”

After a few minutes of silence, Sakurai finally started to discuss about the assignment.  “What instrument do you play, Ohno-san?” Sakurai asked curiously.

“Uuum, to tell you the truth, I only play piano at a beginner level. I know I wouldn’t help much and might have to count on you a lot. My friend told me that you’re a very talented violinist,” Ohno said it with an apologetic tone. He was starting to think that he made a big mistake by taking the music class, and would trouble other people because of it.

Sakurai just smiled and started the discussion about what theme that they were going to compose. Ohno just listened to him attentively while making comments here and there. He really thought that he would follow whatever Sakurai came out with.

After they discussed for a while, Sakurai suddenly suggested using rain as their theme. When Ohno looked at him with a questionable look, Sakurai sighed and started reasoning. “Uuum, I think it would be easier if we choose rain. After all, rain has so many impressions. We can improvise from there.  The music for a gentle rain or a hard storm should be very different.” Sakurai paused for a while. “Is it okay with you?”

Ohno just gave a small nod to show his approval. “I always love the sound of the rain. I’m sure we can compose something about it.”

“Now, let’s..,” Sakurai stopped talking and his attention was suddenly focused at one direction. Ohno was curious and he followed Sakurai’s eyes and also looked to that direction. He saw a beautiful girl kissing passionately with her boyfriend. “You know, until yesterday, she was still my girlfriend. Then I found out about her affair.” Sakurai said it with an angry and disappointed tone.

Ohno couldn’t say anything in return. He was not used giving comfort to someone else.

Both kept silent until Sakurai muttered a few words, “Love is a weird thing. I’ll manage and move on. Someday.” It was more like Sakurai was telling those words to himself than to Ohno.

“Time will heal, Sakurai-san,” Ohno said softly. After that, the situation turned awkward. They promised to meet again in the music room to start their project. Ohno felt that Sakurai needed some time to be alone so he suggested to end their meeting and went back to their dormitory.

Surprisingly, they both lived at the same dormitory, so they walked back together while talking casually about university life. It was autumn, and the road to the dormitory was filled with leaves falling everywhere. It was one of Ohno’s favorite moments of the year, and he stopped here and there to admire the beautiful scenery in front of him. Unconsciously, Sakurai smiled a few times seeing Ohno’s admiration towards nature. “He looks so innocent and childish,” Sakurai couldn’t help thinking.

After that day, Ohno and Sakurai grew closed to each other. They started calling the other casually, and met almost every day. Sho had particularly asked Ohno to call him Sho, just like how his close friends did. They would talk about their project, and hang out together afterwards, sometimes with Jun, or with Sho’s closest friends, Nino and Aiba. The five of them would meet for dinner and have some drinks afterwards. They quickly became best friends and nothing could separate the five of them.

Ohno himself enjoyed his meetings with Sho. Being with Sho was so natural. He simply was himself; no need to pretend to smile or talk when he didn’t want to. He really loved the moments when he and Sho were alone in the music room. Sho would play the violin while he sketched or played the piano with him.

Ohno always thought that Sho was sparkling when he played the violin. Sho would play a song, and Ohno was sure that even the animals outside would stop whatever they were doing just to listen to the music.

They were doing their daily routine, when Ohno stopped suddenly. “Sho-kun, I have something for you.” He walked to the corner and picked up something that looked like a canvas.

It was Ohno’s painting of Sho playing the violin in the music room. The painting was so detailed, it felt like Sho could hear a calm and peaceful melody came out from the painting. Sho couldn’t believe it was him and he murmured that the painting was too beautiful and not realistic.

“But it is the you that I see through my eyes,” Ohno answered the question while smiling gently. Sho felt his cheeks reddened after hearing what Ohno said. “Thank you, Ohno-kun, I promise to treasure this painting.”

Sho then put the painting in his room and he would sometimes look at it and smile to himself. Nino would often tease him and tell him to confess already. Sho would blush and throw some pillows at Nino to make him shut up. “We’re just friends,” he said this time, denying the accusation with all his might.

Then, in a more serious tone, Nino answered him. “Sho, you should realize your own feelings. He won’t be there forever.” Nino words stunned Sho. He didn’t want to imagine his world without Ohno in it.
