Yes, that seems to be what happened - Finch knew someone would try to attack the Machine, so sold/leaked/lost code to the bad guys, but there was a trap within the code he gave them, that somehow (magically) when they based a virus on it, it instructed the Machine to pack itself up and get the hell out of dodge.

I think.

More importantly, I honestly felt for a moment that John was gonna start making out with Finch during their conversation at the end OMG.

I KNOW RIGHT. John could not possibly have looked more like he desperately wanted to kiss Harold, or possibly just fall to his knees and kiss Harold's hands and proclaim his undying devotion. SO GOOD FOR ME.

If I understood it correctly, Finch sold a laptop to the Chinese - the laptop John and Kara were supposed to recover when the CIA tried to kill them - and it contained the virus that set the machine free? Am I getting this right?

Oh, right. That was it, and did I mention I was way too tired? ;) I may have to think about that again next week when I'm awake, because there are some limitations and very low odds this would work at all if someone else altered his code to make a virus out of it. Oh well, it'll have to wait.

I need to know for a fic!

Hee. :) Do write! Okay, so that last scene was maybe a little inspiring, I guess. ;)

Hee, this one's actually for the fic where things went a little differently in Ordos and Kara and John are still working together for the CIA and end up taking Finch prisoner, so it's really not a fic inspired by heartwarming scenes of John and Harold trusting each other implicitly, as much as I enjoyed that. ;)

But the main plot hinges on me sorting out
a) what Harold really did with the Ordos-laptop versus
b) what Kara tells John he did,
so I'm really glad we got some definitive answers on a) this ep.
