Mia had agreed to try sleeping in Oliver and Chloe's room for a few nights, just to see if it would help with the nightmares. She wasn't really fond of the idea, because she was seventeen and not five, after all. She couldn't be running to Ollie and Chloe whenever she had a bad dream. It was childish.

She glanced towards Mia one more time then tightened her arm around Oliver, with all of them in the same room, at least she knew they were all safe and would hear the second something happened, if it happened. Maybe that would help her sleep better too.

When the elevator stopped, Mia waited for the doors to open. But a trickle of something dark and red seeped under the crack instead. Mia frowned and pushed the button again to open the doors. This time they parted smoothly, a rush of the red liquid coming in to wash over Mia's feet. She stepped out into the hallway.
"Ollie? Chloe?" Her feet, which were bare, made squishing sounds against the carpet and came up stained red and sticky. Mia ran to Oliver's bedroom, then the guestroom, and found no one. Finally, she went to her own bedroom door and pressed her ear against it. She could hear a faint creaking noise, like a rocking chair would make but the door wouldn't open.
