they probably don't have anyone with autism in the organization "Autism Speaks" because most autistic people can not communicate or speak, but the organization is made up greatly of parents or family members of those with autism. and yes, great pain does not come from autism because it is not a physically painful disorder. actually the autistic most likely do not experience much pain or grief in their disease, but probably the true pain of autism is in those who care for their family members and children for autism their entire lives and have no hope for a cure or to ever hear their child say their name

For those who don't know, I am not autistic but I am the mother of an awesome boy who is. I wholeheartedly agree with your statement "The pain of being autistic is not due to the autism itself... it's the pain inflicted by others because of having it." During his short time in "therapy" I saw him unhappy and I saw those working with him taking credit for every advance that he made, had I not been paying close attention to what he was 'saying' (even when he was non verbal) I may have never noticed. He is not currently receiving any type of therapy and we homeschool, there is enough time later when he is better equipped to deal with it to face the predjudice behaviors towards autistics (that are often all the more easily inflicted because they come under the guise of 'helping

You know what? I totally agree with the last thing you said. It reminds me of a lot of situations I'm in and other "groups" I belong to (like autistic people). I'd be perfectly fine with being autistic if it weren't for how other people treated it
