Unpopular Opinions

When you've typed the same comment half a dozen times, it's time to top post.

So many people are irritated, angry, and/or hurt from something or other that was said on the anon meme (box_in_the_box has an unlocked post on the subject). And all I can think of, every time it comes up, is "of course an anon meme is throwing up nastiness; what's going to stop ( Read more... )

Just want to say "you're lovely." Thank you for a moment of reason in a day of insanity.

What, you're not going to insist that I made you cry and I can't be a real fan if I've been in more than one fandom? :D

LOL--as if! Nope, no OTP, no OTFandom, just people finding like-minded people to squee and chat about the stuff they love. When it ceases to be fun, it ceases to be worth being part of.

And very cool that you remember the Beauty and the Beast business. I remember watching the show, but wasn't involved in fandom (was too young/sheltered to really understand or know about it). I was reading about fan culture and came across a discussion of that situation in a book on fan fiction, and I found the whole thing fascinating. Human nature is, as ever, the same.

BatB is bloody burned into my brain. When someone who had been a very good friend in face-to-face space tells you that you only like a season because "you don't know the difference between right and wrong" it really sticks with you.

That and tearful insistence that you Hurt Someone's Feelings and How Dare You Show Your Face in Fandom a decade and a half after the fact. That was truly... special.

Dig around my rant tag; about two years back you'll find my "this is what a fan war looks like" post. Who doesn't even come *close.*

Thank you, for being a sound and sane voice in all the babble. And yes- technology hasn't changed human nature, it's only made it faster to post.

I'm increasingly giving up on "fandom" so much as keeping on certain lists just for the gossip (I'm one of those spoiler fiends) and answering old-school questions (being that I'm an old fart who actually remembers all this crap), particularly when my knowledge of the behind-the-scenes from 25 years of DWM is still in my head and may be useful ( ... )

Hee! Actually, I like knowing that there are others who remember the Before Time. Fandom before the Internet. Seems unthinkable now, even though arguably the first modern fandom dates back to the late 1800s.

Torchwood's groups are even worse, blatantly deleting posts without warning

I sympathize; I have yet to have a post make it to the official Barrowman list. None of them are deemed on topic, even when they're directly answering questions/comments. The first block I could understand - it was risque and there are kids on the list - but the second made me throw up my hands and say "Fine, if you want me to lurk, I'll lurk."

I trust Moffat to keep the heart, if he changes the limbs and flourishes. He certainly knows Who backwards and forwards old and new.

Ever watch She Wolf of London? I knew someone who knew someone who wrote an episode. One scene of his made it in untouched... and by then it didn't match the rest of the episode.

Hmm...now I'm curious. I know the person who wrote "Nice Girls Don't." You?

Am I that person or do I know that person? No on both counts.

ETA after a reread: Obviously, I'm not that person. (And the reading not-comprehension award goes to...) And no, I don't know the author of Nice Girls Don't either - I knew someone who knew them and mentioned that the "I won't do what you don't want" scene in the hospital was the only one left from the original script.

BRAVO! That's how you do it!

I can see the point of some anons - the kinkmeme is easier to be on if your boss can't track your participation, and the whole point of fansecrets is to be anon - but on the other hand, even the secrets posts have their trolls.

Ugh, I find the anon_meme so pathetic. A few years ago, I've found myself flamed on a random one I stumbled upon just because I was the first one to leave a comment on my cousin's online comic. The hell? I'm a nobody.

I'd rather remain oblivious if someone was writing anonymous posts about me, hence me avoiding the who_anon one or whatever it is. Out of sight, out of mind. Why should I deal with that unwanted heartache?

Yep, my position exactly. A couple of years ago, someone pasted me a link to an anonmeme (I had no idea what it even was) and found some rather venomous stuff about me, and also a rather amusing suggestion that dark_aegis and I were the same person. Yeah... that's really likely.

Now, I just never look. What's the point? It's like that old adage that eavesdroppers never hear good about themselves. It's anonymous, so lacks any accountability, and quite honestly I have better things to do with my time. As you say, out of sight, out of mind. :)

If I thought I could carry off a convincing impression of a rocket scientist, I'd pretend to be just for the laughs ;) But, as any of my BRs can tell you, I am completely illiterate scientifically...
