Unpopular Opinions

When you've typed the same comment half a dozen times, it's time to top post.

So many people are irritated, angry, and/or hurt from something or other that was said on the anon meme (box_in_the_box has an unlocked post on the subject). And all I can think of, every time it comes up, is "of course an anon meme is throwing up nastiness; what's going to stop ( Read more... )

I'm increasingly giving up on "fandom" so much as keeping on certain lists just for the gossip (I'm one of those spoiler fiends) and answering old-school questions (being that I'm an old fart who actually remembers all this crap), particularly when my knowledge of the behind-the-scenes from 25 years of DWM is still in my head and may be useful ( ... )

Hee! Actually, I like knowing that there are others who remember the Before Time. Fandom before the Internet. Seems unthinkable now, even though arguably the first modern fandom dates back to the late 1800s.

Torchwood's groups are even worse, blatantly deleting posts without warning

I sympathize; I have yet to have a post make it to the official Barrowman list. None of them are deemed on topic, even when they're directly answering questions/comments. The first block I could understand - it was risque and there are kids on the list - but the second made me throw up my hands and say "Fine, if you want me to lurk, I'll lurk."

I trust Moffat to keep the heart, if he changes the limbs and flourishes. He certainly knows Who backwards and forwards old and new.

Ever watch She Wolf of London? I knew someone who knew someone who wrote an episode. One scene of his made it in untouched... and by then it didn't match the rest of the episode.

Hmm...now I'm curious. I know the person who wrote "Nice Girls Don't." You?

Am I that person or do I know that person? No on both counts.

ETA after a reread: Obviously, I'm not that person. (And the reading not-comprehension award goes to...) And no, I don't know the author of Nice Girls Don't either - I knew someone who knew them and mentioned that the "I won't do what you don't want" scene in the hospital was the only one left from the original script.

Ah! I misread as well. I know the author of "Nice Girls Don't" and read your comment as you knowing the author rather than correctly reading the "knew someone who knew someone"...so you knew someone who knows my friend as well. And, yeah, she's told me about how that's the only bit left as well, and how it makes no sense in the ep as filmed/aired.

One of my friends who is a professional says that the joke among writers is "Congratulations, I hear your story sold! Pity we'll never see it" or words to that effect.

BarrowmanOnline? Same here. The first time, I tried to post a news item about John and was told that only the listowner was allowed to post news. The last time, I was told the question I was answering had been already been answered, even though it hadn't. I, too, have given up on that list.

It can't be easy wrangling that many people, and the list does serve up some useful news, but as actual communication? Not so much.

Heh, I tried to post a pencil portrait I did of John. It was rejected for looking like Captain Jack. I haven't bothered trying again.

ETA, I'm thinking here of the Barrowman group on LJ, and it occurs to me you may be talking about another group entirely.

No matter which list or comm it was for, I can't wrap my head around turning down a portrait of an actor because it looks too much like a character *that actor* plays!

Seriously! The official reasoning was that the list was for John Barrowman, not Torchwood, and nothing Torchwood could be related.

Heck, I'm stuck on the idea that an actor's discussion group would reject the actor's best-known role.
