Disclaimer: Some people are assuming I support and defend the actions of what I am writing about. That is definitely not the case; I don't condone the actions of the events or statements of any of these individuals; each event garnered a lot of heat and angst from the fandom, and understandably so ( Read more... )

It's staggering the amount of word origami yoga that's done by people, these days, to summon the mobs and pile on ridiculously over-reactive, hateful whinging. One person decides that another person is "bad", so they showcase a few, out-of-context screen shots or statements, illuminate it with their hate beacon, and ... fllyyy my prettiieees... flllyyyy! Suddenly, the target of the hate is given the most extreme, terrible labels, like "nazi", "*-phobic", and "racist", and they drown in a sea of hate - just because someone misinterpreted what they said.

This behavior is RAMPANT in social media and it's driving me nuts. :p

This stuff, it's almost like a drug to the mob. They start getting itchy if they haven't had it for a while. Once it's in their sight all they can do is think about the high. There's no reasoning with them, no talking about it. They're addicts.

Then there's the 'moral' component which is even worse. They think themselves righteous in what they do. It's never enough for them to just tear the target down. The target must be humiliated and made to publicly recant. Even then, even after all that they'll never forgive. They'll always hold it over them because they're "better" than the target.

All of this makes me so glad FE is going to be happening now. Sam can go be with good people and have good experiences this weekend instead of sitting at home stewing in their dreck.

I agree with you 100% - the whole outrage army has spawned a culture that is every bit as toxic as what they're purportedly railing against. I don't yet know what the solution is, but I have high hope one will be found - I think we're at or just past peak outrage right now, and hopefully things should settle out soon.
