I was testing out the camera, making sure everything is back to working order (they'd had to replace the flash unit). When I took a picture, the camera barked at me. I thought to myself, "WTH?" but I took another one. Another bark

that's odd that they would have changed a setting. Are you sure it's YOUR camera? (maybe they gave you a similar refurbished one) Any familiar scratches? If that's not it, I guess someone was in a weird mood. :)
Yes, it's mine. I checked the serial number before I did anything. But it's definitely strange. The packing instructions say that they replaced the flash component, and also that they upgraded the firmware. I don't know what that means, but after taking a few test pictures and downloading them, I learned that my image count has dropped from about 9000 down to mid-2000s, and also that my date is off (it says the pictures I took just now were taken on 01/03/2005).
they may have had to reset some things or the cam resets itself when they did whatever it is they had to do. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Did you find the option to turn the bark off?
I would assume it was either the default or they had to reset it after they did what they did and just didn't get it right... Or perhaps it is new, an update or something.
My husband took our Canon PowerShot S400 with him somewhere or other recently. (It's mine and he rarely uses it.) It was returned to me chirping, but only when I turn it on- it was silent before. It's annoying because it basically alerts the kids that I've turned the camera on and the shots I've been getting aren't nearly as "natural". I keep meaning to go in and switch it back but I've not gotten around to it. :P
Oh, it's not the default setting. That's what surprised me. The default settings are what it was on previously. I just think the repair tech was having fun, switching everything to the wildlife sounds for me.
And yeah - the chirping and barking had to go. It alerts everyone, and we can't have that!
