Media Consumption pt. II

Where was I before I was so rudely interrupted by gaping facial wounds? Ah yes.

Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story-- Remember those 50 cent family movies I was talking about? Anna picked this one last Monday. It wasn't too bad but it wasn't great, either. The characters seemed more real than your average feel-good family movie even if the plot ( Read more... )

I haven't seen the movie yet but I read Memoirs of a Geisha and loved it. I read recently though that the woman who's life the story is loosely based on is really pissed off with the author. She said something along the lines of 'He wouldn't understand what it really meant to be a Geisha because the book he wrote is all about sex.' (I may have misquoted there, my memory sucks.)

I kind of don't want to watch it because I've grown quite fond of Mugen, Jin, and Fuu. I'll miss them.
I know what you mean, I often spend at least an hour after I've finished a good book in a complete daze trying to 'talk' to the characters and work out what would happen next!

I was glad that Mineko Iwasaki wrote her own story after the controversy of Memoirs came to light. I'm gonna reserve it at the library ASAP to see what it was really like!

No kidding! Not only will I miss the Champloo people, I'm on the last book of the hefty Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson and I started the first one in November. I've started making myself slow down so that I can savor this last one before I have to say goodbye to Daniel Waterhouse, Eliza the Duchess of Qweghlm, and my hero, Half-Cocked Jack Shaftoe. I have been quite concerned about all of them, really. Whenever I've spent a long while with characters, I dread having to say goodbye to them. I suppose lots of people have that problem judging by sites like fanfiction.net though it seems like 99% would like to imagine characters shagging eachother or the author of said fanfiction. Ick.

Tristan and Isolde, that's like... 12 Century? Funny how some stories can stand the test of time.

And watch Once Were Warriors, damn it. :)

Looks like 12th Century. I'd first read about it in a book of tales about King Arthur but it sounds like the story was much older than that. It's the original Bizarre Love Triangle!

I'm on it! I'll even move it up to the top of the Netflix queue. Should have gotten it for Australia Day but I wasn't thinking that clearly after half a bottle of Australian Cabernet. Mmmm. 2003 Black Swan Cabernet is about the best bottle of $6.00USD wine I've ever found!

Lol I've heard several times that American winemakers HATE Australian wines, because we flood the market with high quality wine at prices they can't match. Sounds like it's true. :)

There was even a highly-publicised wine show in LA where all these wine critics got together and absolutely trashed Australian wines. Last place in just about every category. You could just about see the fistfuls of US dollars sticking out of their pockets, courtesy of the American winemakers.

Good to know capitalism works sometimes, anyway! And good to hear you were getting drunk on my national day while I was working like a slave in the fields. :)

How does Netflix work? I've never heard of it.

have you seen pride and prejudice yet? the latest movie version that is. i went to see it yesterday with india and we loved it. i was worried it couldn't stand up to the excellent BBC mini series of a few years ago, and colin firth is still the best darcy by far, but aside from that it was a wonderful telling of the old story and the filming was like art. it was beautifully and very creatively shot ( ... )

Funny you should mention! I haven't seen either the BBC mini series or the movie but a couple of weeks ago one of my neighbors told me that they were watching the mini series and they remarked to each other that I look a lot like Elizabeth, played by Jennifer Ehle! I'm not so sure of the comparison, but with that kind of flattery, how could I not add it to my Netflix queue right away?

Hollywood does the old switcharoo on us so often that I was just relieved it wasn't Cameron Diaz as "The Last Geisha" or other nonsense, really! Sure it would have been nice to have the entire movie cast be unknowns so that I could get into the movie more (rather than half expect Michelle Yeoh and co. to start jumping around roof-tops and beating the crap out of each other) but I've learned not to expect too much from those Hollywood grass fuckers, as my buddy the Filthy Critic calls them ( ... )

yes, i can see the resemblance between you and jennifer ehle! if you haven't seen either, order the mini series over the net. it's wonderful. and you can watch yourself get steamy over colin firth doing his darkest most broody :)

thanks for the tip on brokeback. shall just have to take myself off or drag a girlfriend along i guess.
