Okay, for a long time now I've been cruelty-free with healthcare items like shampoos etc., but I used regular anti-perspirant deodarant as did my husband. He also used regular bar soap, like Irish Spring. We've been in the process of turning all products in the house green and have discovered that cruelty-free deodarants do not do what the others ( Read more... )

I've found Tom's of Maine to work pretty well. They are also cruelty-free and generally use natural products. They aren't entirely organic (unfortunately), but they're decent, for what you can get.

As for soaps, I swear by Dr. Bonner's Pure Castille Soap, which can be found damn near anywhere - personally, my favorite is the tea tree oil blend. You can also make your own castille soap or gylerine soap pretty easily, therefore even further ensuring that it is cruelty-free and as toxin-free as possible.

Okay, this illustrates the point I was just about to make. gezellig_girl January 2 2004, 18:58:07 UTC
My husband and I have both tried Tom's of Maine deodorants and *stank* horribly as a result.

I really think it's a matter of trying a bunch of cruelty-free deodorants and finding which one works with your specific body chemistry. I really like Kiss My Face's deodorants and my husband uses J/A/S/O/N or Nature's Gate brand.

Good luck!

I don't really like Tom's of Maine either... even their toothpaste was horrible... I couldn't even use the whole bottle cause it made me want to gag.

I do like JASON brand though. I use the Tea Tree deodarant stick, it has worked the best for me so far.

Crazy...I was going to pose the same questions. I'd like to find a bar soap that I can buy at any grocery/drug store that is cruelty free because it isn't easy to get to the health food store as often as I need to.

But, I did recently find Mitchum deoderant/anti-perspirant (I *have* to use anti-perspirant and most cruelty-free items are deoderant), which is made my Revlon and they don't test on animals.

I think a lot of places carry Dr. Bonner's - honestly, I don't shop at "regular" stores much anymore (I run an organic food store), but I'm almost positive I've seen it in the local places here.

i'll second the suggestion for bronner soaps. especially the peppermint, tea tree, and lavender, if you need a good deodorant soap.
for deodorant, i use a crystal when i get out of the shower, and then follow it up with desert essence's deodorant. it works pretty well.
i also try to sneak fenugreek into my food when i can- it makes pitfunk smell sweet. :)

a spice often used in indian cooking. it's a hard little seed, sort of triangular. googling it will probably be more informative than me trying to go on about it. :)

Although they're closed for the holidays until Monday, Clean Habit Soaps has handmade vegan soaps. There is one called "Coffee Chef" that is awesome! I think the bars are like 3.25$ each, which is kind of pricey, but they last for MONTHS.

I used to live in central California, where we'd have nasty 110-degree summers, and all I used to keep the funk away was the Coffee Chef soap and a little bit of tea tree oil.

Good luck!

Do you only use products made by smaller companies? Yves Rocher is cruelty-free and made with organic botanicals, but it might be a larger company that you are willing to do business with. I use their lavender deodorant and it works very well. I've also liked the Body Shop's chamomile deodorant in the past but I've heard they changed their formula. I think most cruelty-free deodorants are also aluminum-free, which from a health point of view is a very good thing, but unfortunately not very helpful if you want a deodorant that actually works.
