Mattress Covers

I looked through the furniture tag and didn't find exactly what I'm looking for. I'd love to make our bed less toxic, but we cannot get a new mattress at this time. If I buy a mattress encasing cover, will it keep the nasty offgassing chemicals inside as well as the dust? Are they airtight? And does anyone know what the least-toxic type of covers ( Read more... )

I'm pretty sure that anti-allergy covers are airtight, but I have no idea if they would prevent offgassing.

How old is your mattress? Things don't offgas forever, so depending on the age of your mattress worrying about a cover now may be like closing the barn door after the horse is gone.

It's not ours. We rent our house and it's fully furnished. I'm pretty sure it's old, though, because there is a little bit of a sag in the middle. Still, I had heard that they release the fire retardant chemicals as dust forever and that the older they are, the more of this chemical dust they release.
