I took my 2-year-old dog in for her bi-annual comprehensive exam today, and long story short, I ended up leaving the office with a bag of 30 dental chews for tartar control ( Read more... )

Unrelated but FYI: Blue Buffalo has a dry dog food recall going on right now, due to too much Vitamin D in some formulations, including some of their adult dog foods.

Yeah, saw it across an epi list earlier, but I have cats, so didn't pay attention to the details.

Keep an eye on it for the next few days, though - these kinds of recalls can often grow. (You pull the ones you know are affected while still investigating the others.)

the thing that jumps out to me is that these are supposed to be for dental health, but the 2nd ingredient by weight is sugar!

but yes, if your dog is reactive to yeast/fungi, these may not be a good choice since they have both the primary dried yeast and the apsergillus niger.

The ingredient list specifically addresses why there's dextrose - the enzymes need it to do their little enzymatic happydance. ;-)

How interesting! Is there a special apparatus needed for dehydration, or is there a method for gadgetless people?

I've heard amazing things about raw diets for dogs! I'm vegetarian (just breaking away from being vegan for 7 years, lol) though so I don't think I could handle raw meat juice anywhere in my apartment >.<;

Dogs are omnivorous and can do very well on a vegan or vegetarian diet. There is quite a bit of research out there on it now if you ever want to try it!

Depends on what kind of yeast it is - brewer's yeast (aka nutritional yeast) is great for dogs and cats, keeps their coats nice and all and helps keep fleas away. I have no idea what yeast they use in "primary dried yeast", but if it's brewer's yeast, you're all good.
