Lesser of two evils?

The post about tomatoes and beans made me think of this.

When buying bananas I have two options.

Queensland Bananas
- Cheaper
- Easier to find
- Come from the other side of the country.
- Are sold loose (I don't use plastic bags for fruit and veg, unless it's small items like beans or something).

or

Organic Carnarvon Bananas- A few dollars more ( Read more... )

food: organic

I tend to buy bananas non-organic only because I'm living on a very limited income these days. It's one of the few produce items I don't buy organic because the peel comes off. When I get a higher income someday I'll switch over but sadly...yeah. So that's my 2 cents.

Personally I would go for the ones without the packaging. I hate to see excessive packaging, especially for something like bananas! Plus with the heavy skin I am less concerned about conventional vs. organic.

There's also the matter of food miles.

Queensland to Perth is about 5000km.
Carnarvon to Perth is about 1000km.

You don't have to buy bananas organic. They are not part of the dirty dozen and are not grown with a lot of pesticides.

Okay. Organics aside, I think it comes down to the following issue ( ... )

The Carnarvon bananas are marketed as "Lunchbox Bananas", and are in packaging at all stores. I might have to track down their mailing address!

Eco-bananas are the wax-tipped ones - I'm not sure of the whole story on these, but I often buy them, if only because they last longer!

Here's what Google picks up for eco banana.

Of course, a lot of that is marketing, so.

And now that I think even further - the freaking organic produce in the local Woolies here is encased in styrofoam and plastic wrapping so that we don't try and pass it off as the cheaper stuff. Maybe I should start writing something somewhere to someone.... but how could supermarkets differentiate between the two sorts of the same bean (for example)?
