Lubricants for TTC (Trying To Conceive) + Lactational infertility

Mar 08, 2009 15:13

I was researching the effects of different chemicals on sperm mobiilty, and it seems that some popular sexual lubricants are unfriendly to TTC! What's more interesting to me is that while using no lubricant at all is optimum (according to this study), more 'natural' lubes like olive oil or canola oil had the least adverse effect. Baby-oil, a ( Read more... )

Don't have much to comment, lol mainly because single at the moment and things have been slow. HOWEVER I would suggest coconut oil as an option. Great lubricant, a natural antibiotic, doesn't taste bad either ;)

Hey, I just read that yeast doesn't particularly like c. oil, so it can actually deter(!) a yeast infection.

I bet it smells nice. Where do you buy yours?

i found a huge jar of it at a local city wide grocery chain. It was organic and cost like 4 bucks.

I buy mine at local health food store, and since it doubles skin and food I go for the virgin Unrefined so costs more but one jar lasts for many uses so the price is worth it. If I was only using for skin would go for the $6-7 jar sold in more general stores now.

Interesting. The best, most natural lube I've ever tried is... actually getting horny! Haha. ;)

I know it's not particularly natural, but water-based lubes dry out quickly, so I have found that silicone-based lubes are a lot better. A little goes a long way. I'm not sure how they affect sperm mobility though. I use I.D. Millenniumif you'd like to look it up to find out about it.

The coconut oil idea sounds yummy, haha.

I was thinking the same thing... :P Not to be indelicate, but what about good old fashioned saliva? I imagine it is what was used before the modern invention of lubricant.

I also like O'my products. They are free of parabens and other synthetic ingredients and have a hemp base.

Saliva has a nearly lethal effect on sperm mobility after 60 minutes of exposure, so that's a no-go! Some clinicians have hypothesized that since it is only applied in small quantity to the vaginal opening that it wouldn't be in contact with much of the sperm, on the other hand. I imagine that it is still used pretty broadly, even after our so-called 'modern' lubricants. Lube stuff is expensive!

I guess it comes down to saliva being, at heart, a digestive fluid :-0

I have friends who used a lubricant called "Pre-seed" while TTC. They found it was an excellent lube and seems to have caused no issue with sperm motility etc--they were pregnant in 2 weeks!! http://www.comeasyouare.com/index.cfm?fa=Catalog.Product&ProductId=1668 Now I do realized it contains chemicals, and a few of them are ones that some people try to avoid, however as I said, it's what worked for a friend....

I guess that would be the paraben and phosphate?

Most commercial lubes are not gonna be great if you have any fertility issues at all (which is to say, people shouldn't use them as birth control, but if a couple has been TTC for more than a year, they might want to stay away from lubes and spit ( ... )

I wish I had the name of the homeopathic one. I'll have to look around online...

Wow, 18 months! Did you use a paci sparingly from the start? We waited until after 3 months to introduce it, and our DS sees it as a colorful toy, but not something to suckle.

We used it from day 3, Remy is a VERY high suck needs child, the first time I broke down and used it is literally the first time he was content to not nurse while he was sleeping. (He was nursing 22/24 and it was very hard on me b/c I have Reynauds.)

I used it to nudge him off the boob when he was asleep and for car rides. He realy sucked on it, but it made no difference in my supply at all -- this is atypical.

I googled the homeopathic one, the brand is Sensua Organic, but it looks like they may have discontinued their product... there are other products on the market now that I'm not familiar with (and of course, coconut oil, which I don't know how sperm friendly it is, but is good lube, for sure, I didn't know about it back then!)

HTH!

We pretty much did the 7 standards for ecological breastfeeding. (We started solids a couple weeks early, but it was 10 months before she ate more than a couple tablespoons per day, and we only semi-coslept at night after 16 months.) I didn't get my period back for over 20 months.

Nineteen months is amazing. You know, this may be somewhat controversial, but I wish that instead of just passing out condoms in less developed countries, the US govt could educate people in NFP/FAM and in maximizing natural child spacing through ecological breastfeeding. In my opinion, that would be teaching someone to fish rather than passing out a fishstick.
