My sister also lives in a basement. She has an air conditioner on one wall that can also blow heat or just a fan. She turns on the vent in the bathroom on the other side of the room. When she needs to circulate the air she turns on the air conditioner and the vent or opens the door leading outside (right next to the bathroom). It works.

When the air conditioner was broken she just turned on the fan.

I've always just used a fan in one of my windows upstairs blowing OUT. I keep all of the rest of the windows closed except for a few strategically opened ones and then usually the kitchen door downstairs... now you'd have to experiment with what works best, but you could definitely get a great air flowing thru your space with just one fan.

Also, I'd recommend some houseplants! Keep the air cleaner.
