ughughugh BYB's fucking make me sick. i can't tell you how many 'SHOULD I BREED MY DOG??' threads i've seen on some of the dog forums i'm on. it usually ends up in everyone giving HUNDREDS of reasons as to why breeding 'pet' dogs is bad, only to end up with a 'I'M LEAVING you guys are assholes I came here for advice.'
i don't support the breeding of any non-working animal with the overpopulation problem we have today. hell, even conformation dogs, which i love, i don't think they should be bred based on how many ribbons they've won prancing around a ring. unless a dog was bred for a specific purpose [IE guarding/herding livestock] there is no reason whatsoever to breed it. even my Schutzhunde will never be bred, i don't consider it a real 'job' much anymore. just a game.
I'm basically the same way. Eventually, I'd love to breed dogs. For me, though, there will be a regimen: if I don't think they can win in at least 2 competitions (show, work, weight pull, agility, schutzhund, etc.), they get spayed/neutered and sent to pet homes.
actually, now that i think about it, i don't have a problem with people breeding for themselves and their own program [I know a lot of APBT folk who've bred litters, and none of the dogs ever leave their yard, they don't trust their dogs with anyone else]... if i ever decided to breed, i'd probably do that to, but pregnancy of any sort scares me @_@ i don't think i could put one of my own females through it, i'd feel too bad.
