I really need to get this off my chest.

Yeah.

So I was going to do that thing that I usually do with my sister where I just don't talk about it and we both get over it and we move on without any bitterness.

But. I feel just as frustrated as I did a couple days ago and it gets worse the more I think about it.

The three things you should always avoid discussing... )

I think I missed this whole thing as usual. And I'm more agnostic than atheist, but I do believe religion should be a personal thing like you said. My basic thing is if you're not hurting other people, then carry on, you know? *hugs*

*hugshugshugs* I hope you are having an amazing thanksgiving!

It wasn't really a "whole thing." It was basically people not being comfortable with the video Van posted for their own reasons (not bad) and me not feeling comfortable with the tone that was being taken. I just felt more comfortable moving on when I felt I said my peace like everyone else :)

You know, of course, that I'm a Christian and that my faith is pretty strong. But you also know that I don't use it to judge other people or try to impose my beliefs on them, and that I feel EXACTLY the way you do about those things. It's so un-Christ-like that it makes my head spin ( ... )

I really don't want it to sound like a struggle in every day life. If I did, I feel silly. :p I really, really do not mind it at all. It's the way things are. In fact, I hardly even think about it. It's just when this came up that I even thought of it from that stand point. That, okay, I hear praise every day. No matter how small or big the capacity is, I hear it. And as a free thinker, I've been taught in life that there aren't many places to be able to talk about our views. That doesn't even bother me. I would never discuss it at work or pass out flyers because while I'm firm in my beliefs (or lack thereof), I just don't want anyone to feel as if their faith is a bad thing or something to be looked down on ( ... )

I'm assuming this is what you were alluding to on Facebook. I can understand better what you meant and where you're coming from. It's hard to joke about things like religion without accidentally offending someone or some people. For me personally, I have a difficult time when someone pokes fun at Christianity or Christians, not necessarily because I am (I'm definitely not a traditional believer, and I'm questioning a lot of things about my faith), but because family/friends/others I love are. Obviously there are a lot of religious zealots who do absolutely ridiculous things that kind of really deserve to be made fun of. :P And like you said, you don't have a problem with people who do believe and think they should be able to believe whatever they want. There are many people of faith who hurt others who go against their beliefs. Likewise, there are probably a lot of people who think like you do, except they don't care if they hurt or offend others' feelings. In fact they may relish it. But I know you're not like that, just ( ... )

Tasha,

I am really sorry if I had offended you during that conversation. It wasn't my intention, really, it wasn't. My intention was purely to point out that Dr. Harris, who is indeed a wonderfully intelligent scholar in his own right, had made some serious theological flaws in his argument. He was pointing out some things that you have mentioned in this. That, Because I see hatred come out of it too. I see things being prevented from being able to happen because of it.And I completely agree. In fact, it's the entire reason why I'm studying religion in the first place. Because I see my friends being condemned to hell because of how and who they love and I think that is so inherently wrong. It so goes against the love ethic of the wisdom sage, and apocalyptic prophet that we know as Jesus. I just want to hold them and say this, this thing that been used against you as a weapon can be just as big of a weapon against the religious right. That they don't own the Bible or its interpretation. You do. And they can't take that away from you ( ... )

I will say though that I understand. I definitely don't want to come off as hypocritical and make anyone feel like they can't share their views because I might be offended. You are obviously very, very smart and take your education seriously which is amazing and really inspiring. I admire your goal and you're definitely one of the most interesting people to hear/read talk about modern issues ( ... )

And thanks for linking that video! I really admire their message. I remember when Obama made a speech and mentioned atheists and there was controversy because people felt like our "one nation under god" land was too sacred or whateverthefuck to count the atheists. Because it wasn't what our country was founded on. Which, okay. Bull shit. But I don't remember that well honestly because I was too pissed off and clicked out before reading all of it :p Anyway, it's definitely interesting. I'll probably try to check out some of the vids later out of curiosity.
