is it possible to always set yourself up to fail? Even if it's always subconsciously? I think it's a defense mechanism. for instance, I think I purposefully choose difficult things, so that if I fail I can say, "well, it's not like there was ever a chance of me succeeding at that anyhow." What had you set yourself up for this time? Or just thinking generally?

I also think you're correct about it beind a defense mechanism in a way. But, then again, just the fact that you think of the difficult task and then try it (as opposed to just being like 'well I'll fail from the get-go so no need to try) shows that you don't automatically set yourself up for failure.

I tend to look at things with the worst possible outcome in mind that way, if that doesn't come about I'm happier and if it does then I expected it.

I think setting ourselves up to accept failure is a way to protect ourselves and not allow ourselves to get too hopefully or comfortable with how things are (or could be). Perhaps there's something a little odd about that outlook, but it can help keep one firmly rooted.
