Hi

So, I guess it's irrelevent to say that I'm new on this site and have little or absolutely no idea what's going on, but I like the fact that questions are asked mostly everyday or so to spur others to writing. I think I need that a whole lot.

I've been trying to write at least 200 words a day, and before this week, I was doing fairly well in that ( Read more... )

Your mileage may vary, of course, since everyone's got to write the way that they feel comfortable.

But for me? I just have to do it. Just write. Whatever comes to mind, whether it's a 100 word blurb, or a full novel. If I try and plan too much, then it ends up being, "I'll write this... no, no, that... no, wait..." and then I don't write anything. So I just write whatever comes to mind, and if I can piece together something larger later, or get a great idea out of a single scene, then it's all good. But I have to keep writing, and that's what I generally advise to everyone.

Good luck!

What Saturncat said--just keep writing. It may not all fit together, but that's what editing is for later. And who knows? You may not be off course at all--you may just be telling a different story than you initially thought. :)

*shrugs* Do both. Like the others said, just write. Also plan as well. If I'm writing a novel, I have to plan otherwise it'll have no ending. I always know how it begins and how it ends. I'll also have a bit of an outline, but I don't stick to the outline religiously. If my story goes off course, then I let it go off course. Knowing the ending helps me get the story on track without it going off into space. I highly recommend doing NaNoWriMo which is in November where you write 50,000 words in 30 days.

You probably already know this, but we're all going to do something like that in May. Instead of 50,000 words though you can set your own goal. If you want to try and write 30,000 words in a month you can, and if you want to try to write 200,000 words in a month you can do that as well.

And I guess the main thing is just have fun with your story. Hope that helped.
