from the time petra was born, matt's "lullaby" that he'd sing when rocking her to sleep has been "Mr. Johnny Verbeck" (lyrics linked nearly identical to his words). Not bawdy but violent ...

I almost think that is a harder call because kids probably won't cotton on to the bawdy stuff for quite a while, while I'd be afraid a song about making pets into sausages would scare petra in not that long. But maybe it will also help ensure she is vegetarian ...

My dad has lots of weird songs but I can't remember any from childhood that were specifically bawdy. Maybe my mom forbade him from singing bawdy songs to us ...? He would always tell us the context for songs, like the political background to the Rats of Hamelin, Ring Around a Rosy, Will He Ever Return (Charlie on the MBTA), etc. So it was a social scientific learning experience. :-)

If you want some seriously bizarre, violent and macabre children's stuff, Russian fairytales are the way to go. A very strong eaten by wolf motif, along with drownings, beheadings and cronelike property owners who like to accessorize their huts with chicken legs.
