Well you may want to try going into your C:\windows\system32 directory and looking for a file called MSCOREE.DLL. Send that to your recycle bin and see if you can install your .net stuff correctly afterwards.

You may also want to take a look at this page:

This particular article was written with Vista in mind but a lot of it would apply to XP as well. Both operating systems have a bunch of extra default program crap running that you really don't need at all. This list will show you which ones can be safely disabled.

Of course, it's entirely possible that neither of these will help you, or even have anything to do with the problem you are having, but maybe they will.

I'm almost scared to try that fix, as the last fix I tried caused that annoying InstantShareDevices error and had me running scared that I had to install XP all over again...except I never installed it in first place (as this was a "big box store" machine).

Would you believe I at least got rid of the error by downloading the Windows 7 upgrade checker? After that. at least that error went away, which means I can begin the process of moving my files to the new computer, or at least some new hard drives, as backup.

Edit: This actually worked! YES! YES!
